While I totally agree that one of the main attractions of the car is its price (partly achieved via
simplicity) , it is not necessarily true that offering options would have negative effects
on the "base" model, at least in terms of price. Of course, it is always an advantage with respect
to maintenance and repairs (mechanic's knowledge, parts inventories, etc) that all Elios
look and work much the same.

This one had a descent motor.

lol, that's just ridiculous! Ridiculous and awesome, but still kinda silly. That engine probably weighs more than the car, and I would have to think the rear glass would be removable so the engine could breath while running, not to mention the terrible noise level inside!

I noticed it has duel magnetos. That means lots of fuel. It's probably set up just for drag racing, but it does have street plates. JMO

It looks like they are configured in a waste spark setup judging by the slightly different angle of the second distributer. One plug fires as the piston reaches the top of the cylinder on the compression stroke while the second is timed 180 out less a few degrees to complete the burn during the exhaust stroke. Cool thing is our Elio's ignition system likely already supports waste spark(most these day do for emissions purposes). :)

The silver bar that the two go into have gears run off the mag on the right. Most likely it has 16 spark plugs.

No question it has 16 plugs, there are just several things an engine builder can do with that extra spark plug hole in the head, the two plugs can spark simultaneously for very hard to ignite fuels, they can run the second set of plugs out of phase of the first set in a waste spark configuration as it looks in the example above, or they can use the second hole for compression releases in very high static compression motors to ease starter load.

The reason modern cars don't generally require a second distributer/coil/plug setup like on the example motor for waste spark is the move to coil packs and coil on plug ignition systems for emissions reduction in modern vehicles allowing the same ignition characteristics as the complex setup above via software.
