Those pits can be dangerous for employees. A friend who had a good background in auto mechanics was in the Army as a "wheeled vehicle mechanic" and safety was a high concern. OK, one day somebody didn't pull the walkway over the pit and he stepped back into it. By the time he made his first tour in Iraq, he opted for a job as the riding mechanic on a route clearance truck. Did two tours in Iraq, one in Afghanistan and had his truck blown up so many times he lost count. He still contends that a grease pit is more dangerous than the streets of Fallujah.

It looks like I'll DIY oil changes - after a little experience with local oil-change franchises I found that the ones that offer honest and competent service are usually sold - to be replaced by a collection of people who shouldn't be allowed near machinery of any kind.

has any info been released as to if EM will recommend using synthetic oil

Jim

They are working on that. We will likely hear more about this as the engine testing continues.

Q. Let’s start off with an easy one: What type of oil will the engine take? Can we use synthetic oil?

  • The oil that is currently specified for the engine is 5w 20, a standard motor oil. As for synthetic, those specs will have to follow as we are working with our oil partner to find the right blend for our engine. Oh, and the change interval for the oil will be just like most automotive engines, 3,000 miles.

I'm a little confused on a couple of things (in regards to this specific subject & I'll leave it at that) :D #1 "3000 mile oil change intervals, like most vehicles" Aren't most vehicle engines designed for 7-10,000 mile oil change intervals now? I have a 20 year old vehicle (1995) & it's recommended oil change intervals are 7000 miles.
#2 Kody, mentioned finding the "perfect blend" for the E engine, in order to accomplish the required 84 mpg. My question is, in order for us (Elio Owners) to get that "perfect bend" oil to do our changes, are we going to need to buy "perfect blend oil" from Elio?

I know it says 5w-20, but each oil manufacturer's 5w-20 is not going to be identical & none may be that "perfect blend" in order to achieve the 84mpg. So, with that being said, are we only going to be able to achieve the 84 mpg with Elio oil? Once we get to that 3000 mark & change to standard oil...we lose the 84 mpg?!?

I searched before I started this thread but could not find any discussion on how to perform routine oil changes .
Seems impossible to drive in to your local Quick Oil Change business . With only one wheel in back , how will we drive over the pit ? Anyone have any ideas?

Try and fInd a place where they have dropped an Elio's rear wheel into the pit.

I am sure it will not happen the second time .:p

If anyone is that forgetful, perhaps they should use the bus!

I dunno, I have concrete parking curbs in my shop's lot, that face another parking lot. You would not believe how many people pull right up against the curbs, then try to drive forward over the curb to leave the restaurant next door. The poor curbs are 1 1/2 years old, and they are scraped, chipped and covered in tire marks from folks who forgot they were there. CRS, indeed.
