Those pits can be dangerous for employees. A friend who had a good background in auto mechanics was in the Army as a "wheeled vehicle mechanic" and safety was a high concern. OK, one day somebody didn't pull the walkway over the pit and he stepped back into it. By the time he made his first tour in Iraq, he opted for a job as the riding mechanic on a route clearance truck. Did two tours in Iraq, one in Afghanistan and had his truck blown up so many times he lost count. He still contends that a grease pit is more dangerous than the streets of Fallujah. 
It looks like I'll DIY oil changes - after a little experience with local oil-change franchises I found that the ones that offer honest and competent service are usually sold - to be replaced by a collection of people who shouldn't be allowed near machinery of any kind.
