"Thanks to a piece of legislation nicknamed the "stupid motorist law," Arizona drivers who either disobey traffic barricades or who attempt to drive through a roadway covered in high water are liable to pay for any resulting expenses from a rescue.

The law was enacted in 1995 and serves as more of a reminder of what not to do in a flood situation. Other states have adopted similar laws as well, hoping to prevent motorists from making a fatal mistake. Earlier this year, Ohio enacted an almost identical law, named the Allan H. Anderson, Jr. Act. Anderson, a firefighter, was killed in his attempt to rescue two juveniles who ignored road closure signs and drove into a flooded area in 2006. The two juveniles survived. Anderson, a trained diver with 15 years of experience, was 47."

Does that include the idiots who stay behind after a mandatory evacuation announcement? I'm looking at you, New Orleans.

Even though there are laws like this on the books, they need to do more to enforce them.
What good is a law if you don't get punished for breaking it?
We have the left lane "blockers" law here (stay out of the left lane unless passing) and the cops never enforce it unless something else happens along with it. Same with the cell phone law we have here, the cops rarely enforce it, so it's not really doing any good.

Made me think of Gomer Pyle's, "Citizen's Arrest!, Citizen's Arrest!"

The law is at least a starting point, with enforcement to follow. The law itself may encourage law abider's by preventing a much higher % of law breakers than the few we see.

The few stupid motorists that are ticketed are stupid enough to do it again and again. Repeat DUI's are a good example of that!

Sometimes the point of the law isn't to catch violators but rather to let the general public know that it is illegal. In the case of cell phone usage, the authority decides it is dangerous to use cell phones so they make it unlawful. The conscientious public will abide by the law (mostly). Sure, those who break it can still hurt/kill those who do follow it but it's better than just not making it a law. Some would use their cell phones if it wasn't against the law because "It isn't THAT dangerous" but because it's a law, they'll resist.

Still, I'd love to see a couple of laws enforced... Stop means stop. period. Not California roll, not slow down, stop. If the cops aren't going to enforce a stop sign, change it to a yield sign. When it comes down to it, most stop signs could be replaced with yield signs...

That is one reason that I will be putting an air horn on my Elio. I am going to call it my "Get out of the left lane...inator!" :drum:
Yes, I have several "inators" planned for my Elio. :nerd:

Speaking of lanes, in florida (maybe other states) if a cop is stopped on the right shoulder, and you are in the lane closest, you are required by law to attempt to move to the left lane. Never happens!!, Florida- required by law to drive with headlights on when raining- never happens, required by law not to crash into the rear of a stopped vehicle- happens FREQUENTLY!!
