Ask Elio Motors! Paul has mentioned transparency and knows investors, both current and future, have a right to know about such things. They have admitted to a pending legal problem, if EM elects then to not divulge, is it not fair to speculate? Of course it is! That what any objective forum should promote. Come clean or suffer speculation and rumor. Just maybe part of Elio's problems may have been avoided if there was more scrutiny (and honesty) along the way?

The engine always has been rather vaguely glossed over IMHO.

It is never fair to speculate, it's the same as assume, but cut the me out, it's just u. What a statement, "is it not fair to speculate". NO!!! Where was it declared that there is a right to know about such things? What naivety! There can not be transparency like you all think in any business. Geez
I learned long ago not to say ignorant, it gets taken the wrong way, but it's appropriate.

Here's some speculation...

The Elio motor is supposed to have some kind of variable valve system that hasn't been activated yet.
And supposedly that variable valve system was designed to increase efficiency and mpg at different work loads.

The engine itself was tested and installed in one of the P's without that system active. All this was verified by EM.
To my knowledge, at least two more engines are in E-series vehicles. I haven't heard anything about that valve system since.

The variable valve system was supposed to be one of the most outstanding features that made designing a new engine worthwhile.
I would imagine that if anyone were to ever activate and fine tune that system, it would have to be AVI. It still appears to be one of the missing links.

Elio has heralded every other accomplishment that they've been able to achieve, be it big or small.
But to my knowledge they haven't said anymore about that feature of their engine.

Coincidence? Maybe.
Speculation. Definitely.

First thing, hearsay is mentioning something that you overheard. The legal dispute over the payment was discussed on this sight some time ago, if it is so important to you to find the source, you can look it up. The legal dispute with the supplier was mentioned in the SEC findings, also easy for you to look up.
You brought it up so you are the one that needs to provide the proof. I've already said I couldn't find anything. This would be like me saying, "the sun is actually blue, but it looks yellow to us, and you need to prove me wrong."

I told you that I think that it is IAV, that is conjecture. If you choose to think that I am right or wrong, it is up to you. I don't care one way or another. Doing research for the stock, I read every relevant comment in this forum and Elioowners, as well as hundreds from other forums, I do not care to go back and do it again. Perhaps a long term member can remember the 1.6 million debt, it would also be in a SEC filing. The lawsuit with a supplier was in the most recent filing.

something to keep in mind :

speculation is speculation .... facts are facts .... on this forum, presenting speculation as fact isn't the way we do business .... speculating in a manner to create controversy most certainly will result in moderation .... hopefully enough said
Without speculation ninety percent of the comments would not be here

Here's the actual quote from the SEC filing:
Additionally, a claim has been made by a supplier for payment of a past due balance, which we expect to resolve with the next funding.

To jump from that sentence to IAV is quite the jump though. Not implausible though. It could also easily be RedDot, Continental, Roush, etc...

A Chorme-Nickle-Silicon (Nikasil), Nickle-Silicon-Carbide http://www.uschrome.com/nicom (NiCom) or https://usctechnologies.com/ (TriCom-600) is nothing new the motorcycle industry has been doing this for over 30 years it is a proven process and being the ELIO engine in in the 900cc range, it s a motorcycle engine. And should take advantage of all the tribal knowledge the motorcycle industry has attained. The Plating process is available across the country. These coating are tough you usually only have to replace the rings and piston when motorcycle engines wear out.
Example: the current Honda CRF450 used in motocross and flat track racing these engines are used and run with some of the highest piston speeds of any engine, day in and day out and only the rings and pistons need replacing. In the case of extreme destruction or increasing the displacement and over boring a re-plating is easily done (for aprox. $375 per cylinder). the transfer of heat is better then with steel liners and the cylinders expand the same rate as the pistons so better sealing across the warm up range is achieved with less oil blow by reducing cold start emissions. important feature dealing with the new Euro5 emissions standard.
You should NOT even think about using old fashioned Detroit automotive Technologies (it is out dated and dead). There is no reason a 900cc 3-cylinder cant produce at last 120 to 150 Crankshaft horse power (naturally asperated) with 120 Foot pounds of torque with 100,000 plus mileage reliability with very little to NO maintenance.
They already Exist and meet Euro5 emissions
Rotax 900 ACE HO https://www.rotax.com/en/products/rotax-powertrains/details/rotax-900-ace-ho.html
Renault Energy TCe 90
Also Yamaha and Triumph have 900cc Triples
The Austrian firm that designed the original ELIO motor at only 50 Horespower is a joke.
They ripped the investors off. I would be ashamed if I were them.
All they had to do was look around at what other engines are available. 50 horse power thats a joke for a 900cc engine. Sorry thats not a nice thing to say but thats the truth.
The Renault passes emissions. The engineering is done. They are stone reliable and in use today
Scrap the Austrian design.

Can -vs- SHOULD

Can the Elio have 150 HP? Sure
Is it necessary, or even appropriate? No.
It's a extremely light and efficient vehicle that needs a different power curve that the engines you listed.
In addition, Turbo charger add weight and complexity, something not (yet) appropriate with the Elio philosophy.

and Renault isn't exactly known for making great engines.

(which explains why you think 100,000 miles is reliable)
