With the new cam cover this engine now looks so very reminiscent of the O Series made by British Leyland. That engine first went into production in 1978 and was originally designed to replace the cast iron lump in the MGB sports cars. It never did so but it went into a variety of more mundane vehicles instead. It had a reputation as difficult to obtain more output but was very reliable, probably because it was relatively simple in design.

The O series had a belt driven cam and shim type valve clearance adjustment. The latter needed checking and adjusting every 24,000 miles. This was quite complicated because it involved the use of special tools to hold the cam down once the cam cover was removed. Then a variety of shim sizes needed to be available.

Let's hope Elio go for hydraulic tappets which self adjust over their entire life. Then all that will be needed at service time will be oil and filter changes, definitely a DIY job for anyone with a basic tool set.

P.s. Just looked up the output of the 2 litre O series. It was 110 hp. Interesting that Elio are quoting the expected output of their 1 litre to be exactly half that!

There's nothing new in engineering....

I believe it is impossible to draw many conclusions from just these new pictures especially knowing that the cylinder head is different which could mean that none of these castings are the same ones we have seen before. We just have no way of knowing how many castings have been made and what has happened to them.
ONE CONCLUSION we can draw...... they have NOT SHOWN us a more 'completed' engine..... ready for assembly!

They may not have shown the completed engine yet however another conclusion is we do now know there has been additional work going on behind the scenes leading to new castings being produced.

I agree! There are also the "internals" that have to be made. And one thing that I know about engine building is, until you have the pistons, crankshaft, camshaft, bearings, valves, springs, etc, etc......you DON'T machine your block!...or you end up with a bunch of scrap. And when those castings are in limited supply......you get Very expensive scrap!
