My point is this shows hope for the real ELIO engine a lot of new ideas and ways of thinking out there.

Looks like everyone is working on a three cylinder engine. Ford, Volvo, BMW, VW. Some are Diesel engines. Let's get this on the road.

180 HP from a 1.5L turbo engine is actually not really anything special anymore. You can go to a Ford dealership today and buy a Ford with a 120 HP 1.0L turbo which is the equivalent output vs displacement as 180 HP from a 1.5L.

I agree with "goofyone" on that, plus it's all about the Horsepower/Weight ratio. Ford, using alum. in their pickup is the next big step. They reduced the weight by over 700 pounds.

Of course the G1 Insight is a prime example of using alum. for that advantage.

Once these hit the streets I have no doubt that someone will cram something crazy like this, along with a beefed up transmission and drive shafts, into an Elio. Should make for some fun, and possibly very funny, Youtube videos.

Supercharged two stroke diesels do not need to use crankcase compression and therefore do not need to have oil mixed in the fuel like many 2 stokes. This eliminates a lot of the typical dirty characteristics. This along with modern fuel injection and other clean diesel technology has gone a long way to improve the emissions.

just a casual observation based on no knowledge whatsoever ===> testing started in mid November .... Thanksgiving/Christmans/New Years taken into consideration, given 6 months to test the engine, if all goes well the motor should be ready to go into production sometime around June .... I can't help but think about all that has been released about the need for additional road and crash testing, building prototypes, setting up the factory, training the factory works, training techs at Pep Boys, and much, much more .... it appears certain that to get Elios rolling off of the assembly line EM is going to have to shift into high gear (actually into overdrive) .... its going to take a herculean effort to get into production in 2015
