Thoughts About Elio From A Pickup Lover

I realize I have posted about this but I think Elio has some what of an issue. You guys are saying it is an AND car and fair enough I am not disputing that fact and totally agree. However my impressions from Elio Motors is not that.

In fact some of their polished videos come across as this will replace your sedan, truck, SUV, etc. I haven't put nearly the time into research as most of you and if that is my reaction it will be a lot of other people's too. There is a well known principle in business. You should have your seven second elevator "speech" ready. So perhaps it should be something like "The Elio is an extremely fuel efficient small commuter vehicle that fits well in your current collection."

I also think some of you are painting a little more into the part of me explaining Elio "owners" need to becareful about how they talk about the car. I am not claiming you will personally try to sell someone on the idea of replacing their SUV. It is just something to be mindful of is all.

I again go back to the Segway. If you remember it was billed as it will replace walking and everyone will own one. I just think as a more outside observer there is a gap there of potentially sounding like you should replace your current vehicle is all.

I know many of us have posted that the Elio is NOT for everyone, and while we are enthusiastic about it, each person will have to determine if it fits their needs and circumstances. Go to the thread on how will you use your Elio and you will get a better perspective of those of us on the forum.

Right now, I do a lot of yard work and odd jobs and then my truck is irreplaceable. But at 12.5 mpg and 200k, it is not efficient to drive everywhere. In my truck, I only have 2 seats but an extended cab could remedy this. Also, have you seen the prices on new trucks? That ecodiesel ram is great but at 50k+, who can afford it honestly? And older trucks have high resale value, especially diesels, not to mention high mileage and a lot are beat. A base F150 starts at 25k and thats with 2wd and a v6 and who wants that crap?

I do! My frontier is 2wd and V6 but was less than 15k with trade. It's my long distance travel vehicle right now. Fold down the back seat, put the 3 amigos bed in, load up the truck bed with what we need while we are gone and we're on our way.

A v6 is just fine in a midsize truck but 4wd is a must for me. Good for winter!

Personally, winter driving is something I try to avoid. That's why I moved from northern Minnesota to Colorado 30 years ago. Average winter the snow only last a few day on the street. and if it's so bad you need 4wd I stay home.

Personally I have a Chevy S10, 2wd, and its a great little truck for hauling, although I admit to chaining 6 concrete blocks in the back for winter driving. To be fair, I have heard the Ford Rangers are equally good. Equipped with a manual 5 speed, I could get 25 mpg out of it, (I did oversize the tires as far as they would go), and this was my work commute vehicle for many years as well. I retired her now to yard duty, and she still runs like a dream with 225k on her. Had the Elio showed up on time, I would have replaced her with that, but since I really couldnt wait, I got a Ram CV instead, which actually has more room to carry than the pickup, and slightly better gas mileage as well. When the Elio comes in, it will now go to my wife instead of me, but thats ok, I will get another one.

I currently own and drive every choice but the suburban assault vehicle. What I choose to use most often is the motorcycle. When the driveway does it annual imitation of a glacier that will change.
