maybe semantics are playing a role here
the day you are born is in fact your birth day (the first such event) , not usually celebrated as such here in the States, one year later we call it your first birthday.

exactly read my post, I agree you were born on your first birthday- here in the USA you'd be 365 days old when they celebrate your first birthday, other cultures it would be your second-

MY point is it may be your second birthday. But you are NOT 2 years old.
Therefore I am still 73 years old even if I have celebrated my 74th birthday. (by their tradition)
Best way to straighten them out is to explain that one only has one birthday!

I've only had one birthday, but I have celebrated the anniversary of that date 73 times.

I celebrated the 40th anniversary of my 21st birthday!

Exactly. Or you can do it the way Ross did, or the way Mel does, or any way that floats your boat. The anniversary method is the only way to go.
