I changed my mind about starting small. Electra Meccanica s doing just that with their Solo EV commuter. They are planning to build around 1800 Solo's in 2016 for $19,888 Canadian ($15,000 US). If they can hand build an EV for $15K the Elio should handbuild for considerably less, say $10K and still affordable for the masses.

Starting smaller may in fact require less funding allowing time to get some Elio's on the road while creating some revenue flow. It may be doable, but not EMs plan.

building a few electric vehicles and a few gasoline powered vehicles is two very different things .... I have no clue how much a low numbered run of Elios would have to sell for but I doubt $10K would come close to buying the hand built power train

Keep in mind the total number of low production run Elio's to date is 43,000 + which should buy the power train as production capacity ramps up with proven sales when additional funding became available.

A slower production start ramping up rather quickly. I realize this won't happen, but is an alternative plan if needed.

The expense of hand built whether EV or ICE would be the labor factor. EV motors/Battery Packs maybe as or more expensive than ICE.

basically, that seems to be the path EM is taking .... EM isn't building a small company .... with the 1800 per year mentioned, in a 50 week year that translates to 36 a week or less than 8 a day .... at that rate, it would take over 25 years to fill the current reservations .... an option yes but one that I'm glad isn't the path being followed

Saying that Elio could start smaller and ramp up QUICKLY as funding becomes available didn't mean starting quite that small over that period of time. EM certainly doesn't need the capacity to produce 250,000 vehicles a year either on the opposite end of the extreme. Obviously, Elio is going big, or going home.

hypothetically .... I seriously doubt there is much difference in setting up a manufacturing process to produce 45,000 over a period of few months and what EM is planning until the second shift is needed .... if Paul felt he could follow that the company could successfully follow that path, I believe he'd be on that path .... all that being said, its his call and I believe he will take the route that is best for the company .... its easy to be an armchair quarterback

Then I suggest that you contact Elio Motors and ask them; I'm sure they'll be glad to explain it to you.
Elio Owners Forum has no direct involvement to Elio Motors, so we do not have the exact reason that they don't feel that is necessary.
Anyone here that tries to answer that question is simply guessing; we do not have those answers.

And there's no need to bold your lettering, we can see the default font just fine.
Sorry I offended you. No kidding none of us know more than the other.

It is what it is, arm chair discussion. PE contracted to provide 1500 manufacturing jobs and that's what he legally needs to do. That's definitely a going big plan that works for me.

It is the second shift that surprised me. He can have one shift working at maximum efficiency.

Can he meet the employment requirements with one shift, or does he have to have two shifts to meet it? Is that why he has two shifts?

good question considering that they made the 1500 commitment very early in the process. BTW seems it's now too early
