Why Didnt They Make Automatic Standard?

Why would they. I checked a 2016 Ford Fiesta base model. (S Sedan) (MSRP $14090)
It comes standard with a five speed manual.
Automatic transmission upgrade is $1095

the reality is, at a $6,800 targeted base price, they have to cut where possible .... their straight drive transmission is cheaper than the comparable automatic .... consequently, they had to go in that direction

They actually did. It has been said all along that the automatic was going to be an additional charge. We just thought it would be less than $1,000.
I wondered why another name for a manual transmission was a "standard" until someone here mentioned that in years past the transmission you got standard was a manual. Duh, I should have known that...

I've always called them a stick or a manual versus an automatic. And I'll be happy with the stick and more room in the budget for accessories.
I never considered that some wouldn't know that "standard" was a manual transmission. It was commonly known for so long. But there is a whole generation I've lost touch with. Some have probably never read the Great American Novel (Huckleberry Finn). That used to be standard as well.
