No problem. I've got some 28ga galvanized left over from when I installed my new furnace and A/C, and all the tools necessary to make them. I like the design! Would look much better than what I had in mind with the hardware cloth. Thanks for the idea/link! Pics when completed [raining for the nest few days].

I was going to post that your idea with the hardware cloth was prolly as good as you could do, but those caps are sweet!

Another good place to look for solutions is www.mcmaster.com They have damn near everything, little of it is imported, and unlike Grainger, they'll sell to anyone. (And their website is a pleasure to use.)

I must say, you are giving me hope and motivation. I have a gas hot water heater in the garage. The spring bird population found the vent a few years ago, and now I guess it's a permanent cliff nest, and all blocked up with mud and grass. Fortunately the design has an open venturi style vent at the tank, so it's venting in the garage. Still being in AZ I don't need the CO/CO2 or the heat in the attached garage.

I have to clean it out with a coat hangar and then screen it, but can't use a hose clamp method due to the visible location( hate HOA's ).

HOA's aren't an issue where I live [good thing!]. Pacific, MO is in the boondocks. 2 miles in any direction and you can deer hunt, turkey hunt, dove hunt, fish, trap beavers, go camping, etc...Squirrels? I don't even have to leave the back porch. (one 'down', by the way...caught him in the garden have his way with my zucchinis).

We have squirrels, but more dangerous are the raccoons and 'possums that have little or no fear of humans. Sitting on the patio a couple of nights ago, the cat snuggled up to me wanting his usual scratch. In the darkness, I couldn't see him, but when I looked down and my eyes adapted to the darkness a bit, I discovered what I was about to pet had big brown eyes . . . and a mask.

After several weeks of rain, now it's 'gators coming up our bayous. This guy was captured just a couple of blocks from my house . . .
