Borrowed from another forum:

"The AAMVA (American Association of Motor Vehicles Administration), the authority on best policy for all state DMV's and Licensing Bureaus, is recommending the Elio be driven with a standard driver's license."

"The AAMVA also recommends a motorcycle plate be used on the back of the Elio, instead of the larger automobile plate, since the Elio will be registered as a motorcycle or an Autocycle. Utilizing the motorcycle plate will help drivers avoid problems with HOV lane enforcement and tolls, which have different requirements for motorcycles."

This could be good news for Elio and its' potential customers..

Yes I hope this is widely adopted. I have read Elio was working with them for a while on this autocycle recommendation and it really does make the most logical sense.

What I'm seeing so far is that the Elio will be federally classified as a motorcycle. However, this poses an issue for many people like myself. Where I live (MD), a motorcycle license is required to ride a motorcycle. Therefore, I will need to get a motorcycle license to drive my Elio. It's silly as I have no desire to ride a motorcycle so I don't see why I have to take a safety and riding course to get a license when the Elio is not really a motorcycle at all. Will the Elio get an exemption for this law? I cannot see the Elio selling well if people's current licenses are not valid to drive it. Let alone the cost it must be to insure a "motorcycle rider" with no experience. I know Elio has gotten the helmet law changed and some states have an autocycle classification but Maryland does not as far as I can find.

I think they are actively working with the few states that are still trying to require motorcycle licenses to get them either removed or changed to allow autocycles to be driven with a regular license. It would be my guess that by the time they are produced, it will no longer be required.

Yeah, I looked at several past threads on this issue but I haven't seen anything on Maryland. What I have seen on no mc license in some states remains unresolved. I know Elio was able to get a helmet exemption in most states but this is still a major concern that remains unresolved in my state. I'd like to see a nationwide helmet and mc license exemption but production is still a long way out so there's still time. Plus the govt. moves slow too

As someone all ready posted, I think there may be a problem for the people who have this as there only mode of transportation. How can you get a drivers license for a car, when you only own a motorcycle?
