The P5: What Would You Change?

I don't want them to change anything that will slow down delivery of #6109! I meant that after the E series has done its work Elio ought to cobble together a deliverator ( I like that) out of the pieces left over from the testing and see what effect it has on mileage and handling and get an idea of how much weight it can carry.
I really like the "Deliverator" model name, and I hope Elio keeps it if they ever design such a beast.

Intercourse wasting time on sculpting a cobbled design together for testing! That's why God invented computer modelling! Wouldn't even take a day to modify the designs and throw it into the virtual wind tunnel!

Honestly, the relative weight of things, the Elio is not able to safely tow as much as that tranny can take. In past threads we have guess that max at maybe about 400lbs ?? (or was that 600?) including the weight of the trailer. I also did draw up a 3d graphic of a possible hitch design for towing a trailer that motorcycles pull. Find that in 3d models thread. -here-

I was just thinking of an enlarged hatch cover with robust sides to provide height and more volume that would bolt onto the OEM hinges. I wasn't suggesting expanding the frame, i.e., I was suggesting expanding trunk volume upwards by raising the height of the rear hatch instead of horizontally by widening the body frame.

I see it has a 10" height. Is that at the hatch hinge point, and maybe goes a little higher past that? How high is it at the closure end with the hatch secured?

At the very back ,where the decklid latches down, there is 0" of space. The decklid goes all the way to the very tail edge.
10" is indeed the height at the door hinge (at least on the P4). Past that there is a little more room as you get closer to the back seat, but it's not a lot more space. I'd guess an additional 3 or 4 inches? I haven't had the opportunity to see the P5 in person, let alone measure it :p

You can tell some of the dimensions from the frame build pictures and side clearances; those "struts" that go down either side are a main frame structure.

I don't have one handy, but I'd say a 12-pack laid flat would fit all the way back [note to self - buy beer].

As I'm looking at this pic, it dawned on me that with the rear suspension compressed, how much room would there be between the bottom of the shelf, and the top of the tire. If it's significant, say 6" or more, one could make a tub that could drop into the shelf area for a little extra cargo space. Heck, throw a lockable lid on that tub and you've got a nice, relatively secure, place to stash important stuff...side arm, jumper cables, road hazard kit, beer :rolleyes:...guess I need a drain port on that tub. :D

Edit: Just realized the gas tank is taking up some of that space. Might have to go with something comformal to get it to fit right. Adding to the list of possible mods.;)

Wasn't it mentioned that an approved overhead (airline) compartment case would fit?
