Looks like it might be a pain to replace the alternator.

This got me thinking about the last alternator I had to change. It was in 1992. The bearing on the pulley end was a little loud in my 1984 Celica GTS. Actually, all I did was replace the bearing and the rest of the alternator made it until I sold the car 3 years later. I guess the point is that alternators don't fail as often as the used to.

AND unpainted the insignia?
It could happen. A quick pass with a sandblaster and it would be "unpainted" ;). They also could have made an aluminum timing chain cover, to replace the clear one, closer to what will be used in production models.
Or, it might be a completely different engine. :confused2: :becky:

By the time they get through making changes to fool us, they could have built another new engine... which is what I think they did.

The engine is the one part that should have been off the self and readily available. Difficult enough to get a new vehicle to market let alone a new ICE. IMO

Off the shelf engines are not easy to find for most derivative applications that fall in normal ranges of power/rpm/weight/efficiency/emissions ratings. I'm not surprised the Elio needed something different given that its design is half way between a motorcycle and a small car.

Sure, but that engine was designed specifically to achieve mpg numbers to qualify for the ATVM loan program that Elio claims they don't require.

Seems using an off-the-shelf engine, initially, would have allowed them to enter production sooner...
