I suggest everyone here go to Shanghai China. If you like your eyes to have a slight burning sense all of the time, one clear day a month, when it rains it doesn't have a slight burning feel to it, rivers that run orange and smell like sewage, then we need to get rid of all of those regulations.

China has the most solar and nuclear investment by a wide margin.
They know first hand what a lack of regulation can cause.

"Safer than a motorcycle". How so? If both are ridden/driven responsibly...

Motor cycles have no armor. It doesn't matter how "safe" the driver is.
In 2014, motorcyclists were 27 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a crash per vehicle mile traveled, and almost five times more likely to be injured. (Note: statistics on fatal motorcycle crashes are also available from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.)

I apologise for my post and have deleted it. Not because I don't believe that people can do the right thing and that regulation is not useful. I just don't think this discussion needs to be pursued here. Paul is trying to do the right thing "inside" of the regulations and provide more than what the regulations mandate. Safer than a motorcycle, more efficient than a car, more environmentally friendly than either.

Go Elio
Good job, and no one regulated you!

Regulations are funny things. Nobody likes them but everybody likes them... I can't tell you how many times I've heard "All that pollution control crap wrecked horse power in cars" or "All that pollution wrecked gas mileage. My Uncle had a Miracle XMobile that got 60 MPG back in the day and XXXXX bought the patent..." Or something like that. Here's a thought experiment:

Two cars:
Weight HP Torque 0-60 Mileage
Car A 2,465 271 312 <10 seconds 15-17
Car B 3,705 435 400 4.6 seconds 15-25
Car C 2,899 174 162 6.8 seconds 31-42

Well, Car A is the venerable 1965 Mustang... No AC, hardly a heater or defroster... Not a very good ride... But, it DID turn heads (I had one)
Car B is a 2016 version of the Mustang GT.
Car C is a 2016 Honda Civic. I'm glad 18 year old me didn't meet up with a 2016 Honda Civic. Well, my Mustang had a 351W engine and was 0-60 in about 4 seconds but that was close to it's top speed as well. That sucker was geared VERY low.

Anyway, the two newer cars are the results of regulations... safety, pollution, lights, etc. Most people wouldn't buy optional gear that improved the air for everyone but if it's mandatory on every vehicle, we will. Our food is all marked by regulation so we know what we are consuming, too. Regulations, though disdained, are actually important for some improvements that otherwise wouldn't be funded or purchased by Joe consumer. The new efficiency guidelines have people in a tizzy but I think it's a good thing to require better fuel economy in cars. Just think what the US would be like if we suddenly used 25% less gas. We import around 25% of the oil we consume. It'd be nice to wean ourselves from the Gulf... You know - just in case we get into a brawl.

I am sure in your case the bike is ridden responsibly, but most don't get training on riding a motorcycle before they buy one. The simple fact of having three wheels gets rid of all the tip overs and the times when a rider explains to the officer that someone pulled out in front of them and they had to lay it down. It is a proven fact that you can stop a lot quicker on the tires than you can laying down. And it is way better for the bike and rider. Get rid of those two simple items and I think you can easily say the Elio is safer.

LOL... Of course you are kidding. Even riding and driving safe doesn't make everyone else do the same. Getting bumped from the side even at 5 mph by a car can break a motorcyclist's leg or arm. Getting hit in a car at 5mph isn't going to do much more than just piss you off. If a sane person had to choose getting hit while riding or hit while driving, they'll pick driving any day of the week and THAT is a REALLY GOOD indication that being in a car (including an Elio) is safer than a motorcycle!

And no one mentioned the airbags; I know bikes like the Gold Wings have frontal airbags, but those don't do much for a side hit; same goes from being hit from behind. Elio has "crumple" zones, bikes have a back tire. To say a bike is just as safe is flat out wrong.
There is this thing called Physics that comes into play when riding a bike vs. driving an Elio

Because the Elio is small, my wife said that someone will run over me,when I get my Elio. Having said that, has anyone thought about having a flag on their Elio? ( besides my wife),
