It was really good to get v93 in my mailbox.
I keep checking the 3 people working for Elio I follow for a tweet, but all is quiet.

Could be a heat pump :)

This was my thought as well. It would greatly simplify complexity and install by putting both heat and cooling into a single, compact, electronic device. It would also mean near instant heat and defrost as soon as you start the car. One of the things I really like about the heat pump in my Leaf :D

I wonder if it would also improve aero, by not having a radiator for the AC? Hmmm...

Edit: It occurs to me that this could also be the reason the car sent to Red Dot for HVAC testing wasn't sent with a drive train: because it was being sent to test an electric HVAC system rather than an engine-powered one.

The larger picture comes from booboo's post above. He gets credit. Thanks booboo.

These two pictures together enables better comparison.

In the new configuration, I assume the black pulley is for the water pump. It is smaller and thus running faster (assuming the crankshaft pulley is the same size.

In the new configuration, I assume the shinny pulley between the AC compressor and crankshaft pulley is the tensioner.

Electric AC compressors are expensive.

Edit: I didn't know the new configuration picture would be so small.

I am sure the Elio will have conventional climate control systems. A heat pump makes sense in a Leaf because there is no heat source to tap into like there is with an ICE, and no belt to run a compressor. Our Elio's should be quite comfortable with less cubic feet in cabin to condition.

Piston boy:
Those I believe are from the first ELIO. The latest Momentum from Elio explains all the differences and probably the final design.

It is under Momentum v93, this thread ,go back to page 1.

That brings up an interesting question. I ass-umed they would use conventional heat and belt-driven AC. But I bet using electric for heat saves space by eliminating the heater core and electric AC means the compressor can be anywhere and are apparently more energy efficient. That would help explain the beefy alternator.

Having had heater cores leak, I welcome a less complex solution!
Plus, they offer an audio system with an 8'' powered sub. With power windows, locks. and a 300W (just guessing) audio system, 120W might be about right.....considering we'll probably add our own accesories.

The "more expensive" steel exhaust manifold should be stainless, chrome, or painted because it is prominent in the Elio engine compartment.

IMO

Well, they did say why they are going with steel:

Similar to the intake manifold, our engine’s exhaust manifold endured a battery of tests to determine the correct material. Running CAE tests using both a casting and a steel tube design, we concluded that while a steel design is more expensive, it is the correct choice for our engine. The steel tube design is preferable because of its lower weight, better durability, and its tuning of the motor and effectiveness in managing the gases. Additionally, the placement of the tubes have been precisely calculated to ensure that our fuel usage is maximized.

They do have a ceramic coating you can do yourself from VHT

I'm sure they leave them like that because of cost; every costs something, that the Elio is going to be the King of that (I'd say cheap, but that's not true either, it's smart spending where it is necessary).
Yes , good stuff, I used yellow VHT paint on my big truck's brake drums, lasted many years, and still looked good when I sold it.
