Another gross generalization is that most teenagers today don't drive because they don't have a job, and don't want a job. They don't need a car if they're happy living for free in their parents basement.
The car culture for kids is different today. I got my learners permit on my 16th birthday. My son is at University and has no desire to get a license. I bought him a truck and would pay his insurance. He comes home by train. He prefers Uber. His summer job has no parking, which also is a factor. Most of friends do not have licenses either.

That's because driving is more trouble/cost than it's worth in places like Toronto. But don't mistake that for a widespread trend. It's still a necessity to drive once you leave the city centers.

You are right. He can walk or take subways most places. I grew up in the suburbs and you wouldn't want to be seen on a bus.

That is all likely to be highly location dependent. (Also, when Uber goes belly up in the next couple years, if not sooner, that option goes off the table...) The parking lots at the college near me are *packed* full of cars. There's no shortage of college kids wanting cars around here. The really good used cars are few and far between. (I've personally never had very good luck with them, and most people I know have bought themselves into plenty of problems.) A 3/36 warranty on a new car is way better than a 1/12.

Most teenagers today are not into cars like we were back in the day. I know plenty of parents that end up having to make their kids get a license. My niece ended up getting her license but my nephew is going to graduate this year and still doesn't have a license. Go to a college today and it's got kids cycling all over the place, taking the campus shuttle or Uber. Most of the cars just sit. My niece put 3K miles on her Fiesta in 2.5 years of college life. My mother does more than that in a year and she's 85 years old.
And that's the difference between East coast and West Coast, if you're living on the East coast you have mass transit (buses, biking, Uber, Lyft and whatever) move to the West coast and learn the difference, ever hear the song, "no body walks in LA?" well the same goes for a lot of city's up and down the Left Coast, I don't have mass transit where I live, and neither do my kids. Biking? Ha!! Ever see a kid want to ride a bike 46 miles (round trip) to get to a job? across a log ass bridge, with traffic? You have no idea. So what applies were you live, does not apply here.

It's easy to find really good used cars for the price of an Elio because just look for a Certified Pre Owned one. Car has to meet a certain criteria to get this. Companies like Ford don't hand it out to junkers. This is why companies can give a 1 year warranty. What is the powertrain warranty for an Elio? According to Elio, it's 3/36 and that's for an engine that has never been proven out in the real world. The transmission has, so that's good.

As for cars at colleges, for a place that's not a commuter campus, the reason the parking lots are full of cars is because nobody is driving them. Yes, I live on the East coast but we have two colleges here in our area (Lehigh and Lafayette) and most students I deal with never drive during the week and when they do go somewhere, it's whoever has the biggest car (because it's some group trip). Our public transportation is mediocre at best. It's not like the big cities. Go take a trip to Penn State. Big university way out in farmland, yet, many students never drive. campus shuttle, Uber, walking or a bike.

As for the West coast, if that's where people use cars more than anyone and there's bad public transportation, then the Elio will be a much needed vehicle.

Yes Rickb, we know you would prefer to hear will Kilo-watt-Coupe but we're going to put that on hold for now.
My reference was to how important cars and songs about cars were for my 50's-60's generation.......and today not so much. Many younger drivers over the past few years could give a rats butt whether cars they don't want or need are EV or ICE, nor could I for that matter.
