Woodward Dream Cruise Serves as Backdrop for Supplier Partner Meeting, Test Drive

Unless you are from metro-Detroit, it is hard to understand the magnitude of the Woodward Dream Cruise. This year marked the twentieth year for the event – a celebration of the American automobile and some of its most classic rides. It’s a day-long cruise up and down one of America’s most famous roads and it attracts nearly 1.5 million people and 30,000 classic cars.

At Elio Motors, we consider ourselves a classic in the making, so the Woodward Dream Cruise was a perfect backdrop for connecting with legions of automobile lovers. Of course, the P4 prototype’s unique styling allowed it to fit in with all the historic design masterpieces! During the event, we displayed the Elio at 13 Mile and Woodward in Royal Oak, about five miles north of Detroit.

Our visit to the Dream Cruise also was a great time to meet with our supplier partner network, many of whom have offices and technical centers in Metro Detroit. On Aug. 15, we hosted nearly 150 executives and engineers from our supplier partners, giving many of these folks their first chance to test drive the prototype.

Paul Elio often talks about the special relationship the company has with its supply base. For him, the event was a chance to recognize the hard work and dedication that so many people have brought to making the Elio a reality.

“We are fortunate to have so many of the world’s top supplier companies contributing to our success,” Elio said. “These companies and their team members provide technology, expertise and insight that is crucial to every mile per gallon and every penny we save. It was an honor to host so many of these talented individuals and I am honored and humbled by their genuine passion and enthusiasm for this product.”

Elio Motors has taken a unique approach to its supplier partner relationships. By hosting supplier summits on a regular basis, Elio Motors puts its supplier companies together for face-to-face interaction. This enhanced communication allows supplier partners to exchange ideas in real-time and helps foster decision making and teamwork. The result is that all sourcing decisions are made looking at the vehicle as a total system rather than making decisions on individual components. Ultimately, this helps maximize quality and performance while controlling costs.

The supplier summits also provide a forum to truly showcase their vast depth of industry knowledge.

“The other major benefit of bringing these great supplier partners in early like we have is the knowledge of existing parts in their individual product lines,” said Steve Semansky, Vice President of Supply Chain Management for Elio Motors. “No one knows the lines like these guys which allows us to get proven quality and a great value for these parts, using existing technology.”

Elio Motors has a blue chip supplier partner list that has been instrumental to the success of Elio thus far. This list includes Altair, IAV, NEWTECH 3, Comau, Cooper Tires, Henkel, Admiral Tool, Technosports Creative, Cooper Standard, Dakkota Lighting Technologies, LLC, Detroit Thermal Systems, Eastern Catalytic, Flame-Spray Industries, Guardian, Mando Corporation, Irvin, Kiekert, Lear Corporation, Peterson Spring, Plastics Research Corporation, Superior Roll Forming, Takata, Prestone, FRAM, Bosch and Aisin.

Tech Talk V30 was great. The intro to explain why this was a benefical stop was an eye opener to connect with the importance for Team Elio parts suppliers! Such a great vision and plan Team Elio Motors has! Hoorah! Here is one paragraph in tech talkV30
Notice the statement how the Elio Team suppliers get us/the Elio parts with proven quality at a great value! The Elio Team is true to their claim! I am all in and so proud to be owning and driving my Elio Auto Cycle! I like making good decisions, buying an Elio enables me to be getting 84 mpg highway while gasoline prices continue to increase yearly!! For how many years has the price of gasoline been increasing?
Thank you Elio Motors/Team Elio,
Terrence Bernard

I noticed they tagged Aisin to the end of the list, I hadn't seen that before and it's not on their website. Looks like they nailed down the transmission supplier if not the transmissions themselves.
They may not have nailed down the specific model but if I remember correctly, IAV is responsible for the entire drivetrain - engine and transaxle. (or transmission, whichever term you prefer)
