A Little Hollywood in Motown Helps Get Elio off the Ground

If you talk to the executives at Technosports Creative, one of the core skills they espouse is going from data-to-reality. It’s true. Give the company a file with engineering specs or even a sketch drawing and they can turn it into a real product that you can see, touch and in our case, drive.

We think there is a better description. For Elio Motors, Technosports Creative has been a key partner in turning Paul Elio’s dreams into reality. Paul had a very clear vision for what he wanted to do and he and his team developed the initial computer drawings that depicted what he wanted to create.

But, bringing a drivable prototype to life? That took some special skills.

    Enter Technosports Creative.

The Livonia, Michigan, based company specializes in building unique vehicle models and cutaways for tradeshows, and dabbles in doing restoration work on classic cars. But, what the company might be best known for is making vehicles that can be used in Hollywood movies. Among its movie credits is “Need for Speed,” an action film based on the Electronic Arts video game. The movie was shot in metro-Detroit in 2013, just a handful of miles from the Technosports Creative offices.

The company converted seven Mustangs for Need for Speed. While these ultra-fast performance vehicles are more suited toward car-chases and raw action than an environmentally friendly, affordable vehicle like the Elio, the basic premise is still the same. If you want something really unique and cool, bring in the team from Technosports Creative.

Figure 1: Technosports Creative modified seven Mustangs for the movie Need for Speed.

“When you need to take something from idea to reality, few companies are as well qualified as Technosports Creative,” Paul Elio said. “Whether it’s working on a Hollywood blockbuster or helping a company like Elio Motors literally change the way people think about transportation, the team at Technosports Creative has the vision and talent to bring ideas to life.”

The Technosports Creative team first joined Elio Motors for some updates to the P2, providing some refinements to the vehicle’s fit and function. Since then, the company has assisted with the build for both the P3 and P4 prototypes and has provided vehicle maintenance to keep it in top form on the nationwide tour.

Figure 2: Technosports Creative played an integral part in bringing Elio prototypes to life.

Most recently, the company helped prep the vehicle to show off at the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) in Las Vegas. As the Elio always does on nationwide tour stops, the vehicle helped turn heads and create significant booth traffic. The SEMA traffic was particularly gratifying, as these were industry professionals who see eye-catching designs every day.

“The P4 and the nationwide tour have been an important building block for creating relationships with our fans,” Paul Elio said. “Technosports Creative, much like they’ve done in the movie business, has been one of the many unsung heroes in bringing our vehicle to the people. When our fans see the prototype they love it. Technosports Creative’s talent and energy are a big reason why.”

While the P4 will continue to turn heads from coast-to-coast, the next step for Technosports Creative will be on a more destructive – but no less important -- role. As Elio Motors gets closer to launch, our engineering partner, Altair, will design several prototypes for the purpose of impact safety testing. Technosports Creative will take the input from Altair and turn it into physical prototypes. While it will be hard to watch their handiwork go through the impact safety test process, we suspect they’ve seen their work take a few shots before. After all, what’s a good action packed Hollywood blockbuster if it doesn’t crash a few cars?

In the future…let your Elio pay for Thanksgiving Dinner!
    bf001d0f-4ade-455a-8f7c-a18bfd1eeb4c.jpg

Happy Thanksgiving! And, welcome to one of the biggest travel weekends of the year.

According to AAA, an estimated 46.3 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles from home during the holiday weekend. This is projected to be the busiest Thanksgiving travel season since 2007. More than 89 percent will travel by automobile and the average round trip will be 549 miles.

Of course, when anyone at Elio Motors hears about a trip under 672 miles, one thought comes immediately to mind – an Elio owner will be able to make that trip on a single tank of gas! Even with relatively low fuel prices of about $3 per gallon, an Elio owner will get significant savings on that average 549 mile trip. Here’s some numbers:

At up to 84 MPG, it would take about 6.5 gallons to make the trip in an Elio. At $3 per gallon, that’s about $19.50 round trip. Compare that to a vehicle that gets 25 MPG. That would require about 22 gallons and cost nearly $66.00. The Elio driver saves roughly $46.50.

What does that mean in holiday meal terms? It will almost pay for the entire dinner. According to an American Farm Bureau Federation survey, the average cost of a typical Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people was $49.04 in 2013. (okay…sorry we come up $2.54 cents short…you might have to scrimp on the Pumpkin Pie!).

The perfect time and vehicle to rent…

Of course, if you travel with your family during the holidays, you’ll likely take the minivan or SUV. We get that.

But, a huge number of Thanksgiving travelers are single folks…college students coming home from campus for the long weekend…recent college grads returning home from their job and apartment in the big city. This demographic also got us thinking. The Elio is a great vehicle for a rental car or a ride sharing company.
    3044a1d9-fdfa-470a-8eae-0435fafd7d8d.jpg

Car sharing programs have been heralded as a great way to reduce reliance on foreign oil, to save money, and to do something nice for the environment. Elio Motors can bring a lot to the table for the ride sharing concept. With a price tag of just $6,800 and an impressive 84 MPG, individuals who don’t want to invest in a vehicle or who live in an urban environment with limited parking will find Elio a great option for the times when they need wheels.

Businesses can build a fleet for minimal investment, too. It’s possible to buy three or more Elios for the price of a single car, which means they can be added to any fleet quickly and with little financial hardship. They cost less to operate, and a car sharing program could even lower its prices for renting an Elio while still making more money because of its fuel-sipping engine and low upkeep costs.

The use of the Elio could save car sharers money, put more efficient vehicles on the road, and help car sharing programs grow their business. The Elio is a game changer when it comes from getting from point A to point B quickly, safely, and efficiently.

And, if you are looking for an inexpensive way to get home for the holidays, the Elio is something for which to be thankful for!

12/3/14 Tech Talk - What does $6800 Buy?

    Just How Affordable is $6,800?

    Congratulations.

We made it through Black Friday, Shop Small Saturday and Cyber Monday. Unless you completely unplugged from the television, radio, laptop and smartphone last week you were bombarded by holiday themed steals and deals leading up to the weekend. (Admittedly, we are just as guilty as any other marketer, as we launched a 50 percent bonus offer for non-refundable reservations on Black Friday!).

All this talk of discounts and deals got us thinking. We know $6,800 is a great offer for a brand new vehicle with a 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty. Throw in the fact that the Elio will get up to 84 MPG and it’s clear that the vehicle makes economic sense for millions of people.

But, just how good a deal is it? We set out to find some other interesting things that you can get for $6,800. Here’s some of what we found.

Want to spend $6,800 on education? We know our Elio fans aim high, so we’ll look at Harvard – where for slightly less than the price of an Elio you can attend for one month. It costs $240,000 for a four-year undergraduate degree. Assuming you’ll take summers off to take that Wall Street internship (or party at Nantucket all summer if the trust fund allows!), that means you are paying $60,000 over nine months, or $6,667 a month.

Even a public university is costly – Michigan State University, for example, costs nearly $100,000 for a four-year degree. For $6,800, you can go for one-half of one semester!
How about fashion? Thinking of picking up something nice for the office holiday party? Perhaps you can borrow Michelle Obama’s J. Mendal capsleeve jacket that she wore to Buckingham Palace in 2012. It was a mere $6,800!

Or perhaps you need a new watch…the John Varvatos Limited Edition Chronoscope watch goes for – you guessed it -- $6,800!

Sports more your thing? If you and a buddy want season tickets to the worst team in the NBA, you can sit on the baseline and see all 41 Philadelphia 76ers home games for just $6,970.

Making a new vehicle affordable for the average family
    View attachment 15583

We think all of those things are nice, in their own way (well, maybe not the Sixers’ tickets), but, clearly, the Elio is a better value. A comparable used vehicle gets you a mid-size car built in 2007 or 2008 with 100,000 or more miles and no warranty. Not to mention, those vehicles only get about 25 miles per gallon.

Today, the average price of a new vehicle is north of $30,000 and the average monthly payment is $470. What does it take to afford that payment? A general rule of thumb for most financial planners is that personal debt payments should not exceed 36 percent of total income. If a family has an average mortgage payment ($1,061 per month, according to Lending Tree) and two new vehicles ($470 each), their average monthly obligation would be $2,001. They would need a household income of $67,000 annually just to keep within the 36 percent level.

Replacing one of those vehicles with an Elio at roughly $150 per month would bring that family’s monthly obligation down to $1,681 and would make a mortgage and two new vehicles affordable to households with income of approximately $56,000. Obviously, this opens up new vehicle ownership to many more customers.

Whatever your shopping plans for this holiday season, we know there are myriad ways for you to spend your hard earned money. At Elio Motors, it’s our goal to make sure you get great value for what you spend.

12/17/14 Tech Talk - Elio in the Snow!

    Snow Problem? It’s No Problem!
    e19d4ed3-5285-4652-945d-20510d6fcd70.jpg

While the Elio Motors executive offices are in Phoenix, our vehicle development headquarters, engineering team and much of our supplier base is in Detroit.

In addition to the obvious advantage of having a lot of automotive talent at our disposal – it is after all the Motor City – our Detroit connection provides a somewhat underappreciated level of knowledge. They understand cold weather. And, they understand cold weather driving. That’s a good thing, because “How does the Elio perform in the snow?” is a common question for our northern fans.

In a typical year, Detroit gets 42.7 inches of snow. And last year? More than 90 inches.

Trust us. Our Detroit team knows snow. Their knowledge has made a significant difference in our vehicle design and in how the Elio handles the snow.

    Easier to pull than push
One solution to pulling a vehicle through the snow is to make it front-wheel-drive.
You know those Budweiser commercials where the Clydesdales pull the cart? There’s a reason those horses are up front instead of in back. Simple physics dictates that it’s easier to pull something than to push something.

That’s one of the most important features of front-wheel-drive vehicles. They literally pull a vehicle through the snow. High powered sports cars that are rear wheel drive don’t perform well in the snow at all. Sure, it’s a lot of fun to take a rear-wheel-drive-vehicle into a snowy (and empty) parking lot and do donuts, but that doesn’t make for a very safe ride. Front-wheel drive does.
    2ace22c6-0a6e-41e7-ba55-2952d5d994f3.jpg

    ESC, ABS keeps it steady
Another important feature for driving in the snow, or any wet road conditions, is Electronic Stability Control. ESC improves a vehicle's stability by detecting and reducing loss of traction. When ESC detects loss of steering control, it automatically applies the brakes to help "steer" the vehicle where the driver intends to go. Braking is automatically applied to wheels individually, such as the outer front wheel to counter oversteer or the inner rear wheel to counter understeer.

The Elio also features Anti-Lock Brakes. ABS allows the wheels on a vehicle to maintain traction with the road, and prevents the wheels from locking up (ceasing rotation). This helps avoid uncontrolled skidding. The automated system automatically pumps the breaks, but at a much faster rate and with better control than a driver could manage manually.

Of course, we know that seeing is believing. If you’ve not had the chance to check out our snow driving video, check it out here.

We readily admit that we are not a big four-wheel-drive SUV. We don’t advocate that you put a blade on the front of your Elio and go into the snow-plow business, for example.

But, if you want a vehicle that’s capable of cutting through the snow by using front-wheel-drive, ESC and ABS, we’ve got you covered. We’re confident the Elio will perform comparably with most of the passenger cars on the road today.

Many of us remember just how much Zelio contributed to the forum. I feel sorry for the new members that did not get the opportunity to experience her humor, counseling, and her grasp of all things Elio. Her uncanny memory helped anyone who had a question and she seemed to be able to file everything in her mind and recall where it was on the forum. She sure is missed
