I've seen a fair bit of talk from the Elio camp about how they're tweaking this or that trying their damnedest to get to 84 mpg. Don't get me wrong, gas mileage is a good thing and all that, but do we have any idea what's so magical about 84? I'd rather the car come out tomorrow with 75 mpg than see them experience delay after delay because they're hell bent on some arbitrarily chosen number.
Don't know where the 84mpg originates but do know Elio needs MUCH more money before they can produce any vehicles..

Oh, I realize that they couldn't produce a car today if they wanted to. My point was that I find it disturbing to see them obviously tinkering (ie, spending what little money they've got) chasing a performance goal that seems arbitrary.
Fact is Elio doesn't possess the motor or tranny yet and the 84 mpg is probably a computer model estimate.. Don't know what mpg the prototypes are getting with their old drivetrains..

I don't know where the 84 mpg number came from but that is a very good question. I will ask when I see the P4 in a few days however it would be nice if someone would ask Paul Elio where those numbers came from.

By the numbers 3 X 27 is 84.1. Paul Elio said he wanted the Elio to get 3 times the mileage of the average car in this country.

yeah it bugs me that Paul Elio is stuck on 84mpg. If i knew why it might help me appreciate that number. if it is as assininie as three times the average car...well why three? get my drift?
He already screwed with the cool factor by taking the Prowler wheel covers off, or at least that is the reason i am getting for the modification... he also is stuck on $6800. Engineers? well they have their flaws too. Why create a number whether theoretical or not, and then believe you can match that number in the real world? And the price tag number is even more questionable...is it some Chinese Magic Price Point for Motor powered Rickshaws? Come on man. Artificially fabricated numbers? At the expense of what? all the other performance variables and style?
Personally I'd pay more money to have a 70/70/7000 that looked cool..yeah 70 hp 70mpg $7000. And it'd be easier to remember and market..."Lucky "7's"... and it could be called "The 7" and the "7" badge could be easily worked into the fuselage on one side.
