I know that the $6800 is the #2 reason to buy an Elio...........but this is a gas thread.......with the 84 mpg and the cost of fuel savings being the #3 reason.

The world economy seems to be driving oil and fuel prices down. Fracking is of course contributing as well.
I would guess this will put the Elio advantage to the side of low cost(vs mileage), while lower oil prices also make it easier to keep that down.

Here's an interesting chart that shows monthly U.S. Crude Oil Imports by country of origin. Lots of options on what data you want to see in an easy to read format. The link is for crude oil, but you can select from a long list of products.

For me, the gas mileage aspect is a big reason why, but the biggest reason I'm getting one is to be able to use the HOV lanes anytime, without having to be fully exposed to the elements and the dangers of riding a 2 wheeled motorcycle. While the Elio most likely will not offer the same protection as a big car, it is much better than riding a motorcycle with nothing protecting you except a helmet. If gas goes to 1.00/gallon, I'll still buy an Elio. No matter what the price of gas is, it is always better to use 1/3 the fuel, and you'll always be saving money not only from the gas savings, but the lower insurance cost and the lower cost of maintenance. Replacing 3 tires instead of 4, and 3 wheel brake jobs will always be cheaper than on a 4 wheeler. Not to mention the savings on the initial purchase price.

Any company considering the ELIO would not care if it dropped to $1.50 for now. One they know it will go back up, two they are of the mind set that saving fuel and cost is good for them . They would do it anyway.
I did not run out and buy a big SUV because gas dropped a bit , I purchased a car with good fuel mileage anyway.
Gas price will not be a road block to Companies using ELIO's. Most companies use lease and lease purchase with buy back programs. Those programs include servicing directly or through company's that manage the fleets services. That will be a problem for ELIO at first.

A local place is now sub $2 gasoline. I am a mega commuter but my car runs on cheaper propane so the decreased price does not influence me much. Gasoline prices need to get down to $1.10 per gallon for me to be indifferent.
I have been considering the Elio for fuel economy reasons but that economic benefit seems to be dwindling away for me. I already have a small fleet of cars/trucks/motorcycles that I use and not sure I need to add a 10th vehicle to my fleet of vehicles that I insure and maintain.
I was on the fence about buying a Elio and retro fitting it to run on propane as well and using it for my 110 mile daily round trip commute. My commuter car now has 200K miles and I have no immediate plans to retire it.
I guess I will wait for them to launch and hopefully buy one on the used market...

The speculation is that the low price of oil is the Saudis trying to put a squeeze on three things: Tar sands, the Russians, and Iran. You could probably throw all the US prospective drilling going on under that bus too. Once the Saudis are satisfied enough damage has been done to ensure their market share, they'll cut production until it gets back up to about $90-100/barrel again. That's where they seem to be comfortable.
So, nope, not influencing my buying habits. I think we will see high three- to low four-dollar gas prices again a year from now when Elio begins to deliver.
