Joe, you're confused by the thread title. We (I accept some blame here) jacked this thread into another auto/AMT thread days ago, and the mods have been so busy with the holidays, they haven't had time to relocate them yet. :D
82 Olds Cutlass. I ran GA to WI and back more than a few times in that car. Smooth ride, plenty of power and a CB radio to keep the boredom at bay.
My 01 Buick ain't bad, but I don't care for the seats much. Just can't get it quite where I like it.
CVT can work for towing/heavy work. The weight and cost might keep it out of highway stuff, but all the major farm machinery makers build mid to high HP tractors with CVT. They're ideal there, vary engine rpms to save fuel when working light, vary speed for max efficiency on heavy loads, or...
Yup. Im not trying to argue if its more efficient or not, cause I homestly dont know for sure. I'm just clarifying how it works. I don't care how they do it, as long as it keeps me cool.
Lets use 250,000 per year for this. In 10 years of production - assuming every single one produced was still on the road, that would mean that 8 tenths of one percent of the US population owned one. 8 people out of every 1,000. And that's just considering the US, no international sales.
True, and those are just the Eaton transmissions. Freightliner has the Detroit (think it's actually a Euro Mercedes truck design) branded 12 speed and Volvo uses their iDrive. Both are 2 pedal transmissions, no clutch pedal. I've not run either of these myself.
My driving for a living days...
The power still comes from the engine, just via wires and not a belt. It's buffered a little by the battery, though which might help a little.
Purely made up numbers, just trying to explain theory a little:
5hp used when compressor cycles on, say 50% cycle time on a hot day.
2 1/2hp used...
Heck, I don't know. I just stole the pic from Interloper07's post for a starting point. Closest I've come to driving a Mercedes was driving a Freightliner with their MBE4000 motor. Gimme a Detroit or Cummins any day.
Yes, looking at the picture and reading the description, it's just what we think of as the heater core, blower motor, and controls for air flow. My assumption only (and you know where that gets ya.) Here's a Denso page on it...
I'll start with I'm an Elgin hater. I want something more "normal", even if I have to pay for it.
That one looks good, right?
Here's the same display (blown up 2x for my caveman editing technique) crudely turned into an Elgin style display. So, are we...
Ford sold 3/4 of a million of one model, the F150, in 2013. Edit: US only - add 125k in Canada. They've been averaging around that for at least the 15 years the Wiki page I looked up goes back.
Mazda, heck any foreign make, doesn't exist in any numbers up here. There are dealers in "The...
That we know of for sure, there are 3 chassis - P2 (which started as P1, and had a body added), P3 and P4. There may or may not be new chassis built or being built now for testing.
My advice, leave CA now. It's only a matter of time before CARB outlaws every motor vehicle more than 10 years...
Ross, nearly half of all semi trucks built today are AMTs. Drivers love em (most of the time, but truckers always need something to complain about) because they don't spend all day running up and down the gears in traffic, and companies love em for the reduced training time and less drivetrain...
Having had nothing to do with a Nissan, ever, I have a question. Is it actually an AMT or a true CVT? Paddles make no sense on a CVT, as there are no gears. CVT after all stands for Continously Variable Transmission - think overgrown snowmobile drive system (very much simplified from an...
TE, did ya ever stop to think that the hordes of engineers on most products today only make them needlessly complex?
"Too many cooks spoil the stew."
I won't even start on the fact that most engineers have no real world experience with the products they design.
Like I've said before, lifetime warranty through litigation. Most of the vehicles on the recall list are 10-15 years old, and likely have bigger safety issues due to rust or lack of maintenance.
If I was Takata, I'd sell all the airbags with an expiration date. Replace after 5 years, or use...
