My wife drives a Fiat that uses high pressure oil to operate the intake valves. timing and lift duration overlap even frequency all under computer control without throttle losses.

As I am sure you are aware from the Tech Talk the Elio engine will pretty much use a very simplified version of this idea. Oil pressure will open or close a pin which sets the two positions of intake valve lift/timing. This simple system provides much of the benefit of a full on variable timing and lift system without most of the complexity and cost.
