I believe I remember seeing the cost of the AMT estimated at $1000, the the delivery fee to be $700 unless you are picking up at the factory, in which case the fee may be waived. I wouldn't expect the cruise control to be less than $300, so I would plan on $8800, plus your state and local fees and taxes, less any deposit. Don't forget insurance.

....and $20 to fill it up before you leave the factory. Checking Mapquest, should run me a whole $25 in gas to get her home. I'll probably spend twice that for munchies/meals on the trip.

I've seen lots of numbers floated around on options, delivery charges, etc. Do we have any ballpark numbers on what the various options will actually cost? I'm getting auto, cruise and plain old radio. I don't intend to get the fancy skyactiv system, heated or leather seats or an extra price color. Taking EM at their word, right now, I'm thinking $6,800 base, plus $800 AMT, plus $200 cruise, plus $500 destination charge, plus $500 registration fees to the DMV. (No sales tax in Delaware, but they hit you on a new registration.) That gives me an estimated total of $8,800. Am I way off base? I assume there are things I have not considered and need to factor in. After getting my all-in credit of $1,500, that leaves a balance of $7,300. For the last year or so, I've been making my future car payments to a separate account, so I want to make sure I don't come up short when its time to write the check next July (??) (#7797). So, what am I missing??
Hey Chris, smart move on putting away car payments now! We have always done this and we have paid cash for several vehicles or at least managed to not have to take out a large vehicle loan. I would plan on at least $9,000 and shoot for $10,000 OTD. It never hurts to have a little extra put away for that "Oh crap, I forgot about.......!" Or the increase in taxes, registration, ect....... That it seems most states are now talking about.;) If you over shoot your goal, you will at least have gas money for your Elio!:)

Kind of depends upon the final delivery date doesn't it? Depending upon who you ask, it could either be barely enough to purchase the car, or if invested correctly could end up being a cash cow that is willed to heirs.
I'm from NYC, now Fla- is this what you're thinking?

I've bought my last 2 cars for cash by the same method. It makes more sense to earn interest than to pay interest. Unfortunately, the interest at my credit union is less that 1% right now.

We have and our grown children do the same make payments to our self for all cars and motorcycles paid in full before they come home. We don't put the money in a saving account, it goes to a mutual fund. We then use that to take what we need for a new car or bike.
been that way for 30 years. Did the same with a new home.
I am sure the ELIO is going to cost a bit more they the $6,800.

My Elio money is in the bank ready to go. I will keep it basic with just auto trans and cruise control. I will use my Garmin for my GPS. I may go with the basic radio if there is a way to connect my portable satellite radio receiver. Who knows what all the options will be. I will make my final selections when the time comes.
