Hmmm...Made me look at it again. I think you're right. If it were 'digital' [no moving parts] wouldn't it be blank when the power was off?

However, most of todays autos use inductive pick-ups instead of a cable to activate the speedometer. The same tech used for distributorless ignitions on the engines.
Remember the old Chrysler "hall effect" distributors? Inductive pickup.

My two pennies:

Pros
Simple clean design.
Ads to the minimalistic approach to the car itself.

Cons
I prefer gauges to dummy lights. With gauges you can see things such as your oil pressure dropping or your temperature rising, making it easier to see the health of your engine.
May be harder to read, especially the tachometer.

In my opinion, the Elio is to small to add things, such as gauges to the dash. Personally I would rather see it as an option with a traditional gauge cluster as standard equipment.
