I was stopped once (in Illinois) for having a flat, clear cover on my rear plate. The trooper said it was a matter of visibility; that the plate couldn't be read through the glare of following headlights at night. No ticket, he just said to lose the cover, and I did.

I had a light smoke (grey) one over the front plate; had it on there for 3 or 4 years.
That is until I got pulled over by a Stater in Eastern WA.
I was driving a white 98 Monte Carlo, lower 2", tinted glass (legal but with a black interior it looked darker) on I-90 speed limit 70.
He asked "do you know how fast you were going?" gee what to say, so I told him the truth "the Speedo showed 72, and I was on Cruise Control"
He looked at the wheels (2002 factory 5 spokes) did some mental calculations and asked if I always use the Cruise; "Yes sir I do"
He told me I was clocked at 76 and was at the bottom of a hill when they clocked me; asked me for ID; handed it to him and asked if he wanted my registration and insurance card; "nope" as he turned and took my ID back to his car.
At that point I knew at most it would be a warning, and it was; at that point he confided to me he was training rookies and he was getting tired of writing tickets and to remember that when I came back the other direction; and "one other thing, lose the cover on the front plate, it obstructs clear viewing, have a nice day".

You know, even with all said, I managed to leave the front plate off of my Miata for eight years (Just hated the way the car looked with it in place.) before anybody said anything about it. Got stopped coming into town at 0200 on the Fourth of July, coming home from work, and got stopped on the main drag of town. Told him the bracket must have given up, and I'd get it taken care of on the fifth. He actually followed me home... The front plate has been on ever since, but it's on a hinged bracket that lets the plate lay down in the nose at speed.

Some airlines will not accept cash for beverage service. My money says on it "legal tender for all debts public and private." So how do they get away with that one?

It isn't a debt unless you grab the beverage and consume it at which point you will be in debt to them for the price of he soda...

You could try a sheet of polarizing film. Just a guess. These cameras operate in the near infrared, and something that blocks those frequencies would do the trick. Alternatively, pull a james bond (early James Bond) and have rotating plates ...

This stuff looks perfect: http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/CardMaterials/Home/ProductsServices/ClearCardIRFilm/

I also purchased an electric plate holder that will cover your license plate with a cockpit switch . I did not install it because my county "decided" not to install cameras in school zones . The requirement for a strict 15 MPH would inevitably summons every driver , every day and lose elections for those that support it .
