On the other hand, CWA is still very much needed in the call center industry.
I wonder how that works out for them, considering how much overseas call handling is done for companies all over the world. Not a place I'd care to be myself.

As I said, I am speaking from personal experience in the UAW and the auto industry... other's mileage may vary. There was definitely a time where they were needed there, but they have long since outgrown their usefulness to become a burden on the worker to only benefit the organization. :(

...and you drive out with a new car with your plate from your trade-in attached, temporary registration, and a certain number of days to contact your insurance company - they deal with the DMV.

... and you have no trade-in, you drive out with a 30 day paper plate/tag, temporary registration and a certain number of days to contact your insurance company- they deal with the DMV

(yes- I've simplified the whole process) but my point is,-

so you are contacted by Elio to select your options - with the possibility that your car will be ready in the next week and....
Assuming no trade-in
and you (and many low number owners) want to drive to the factory to pick it up-
who/how will you close the deal? loan officer on site?
after the deal can they issue a temp reg, from Louisiana that'll get me back to fla and (require me??) time to deal with the DMV
with trade-in?? not knowing the trade-in value ahead of time, when you drive down??
Seems to me, Elio will HAVE to have the showrooms operational to sell cars.
This the (logical?)extension of too much time to think about it.???

Any ideas??

I highly doubt you will trade in your car, you will be selling it to a third party. They aren't operating a used car lot so I doubt they would want trades sitting around.

You will not use your plate either...Elio is classified as a motorcycle.

I assume that they will some way of financing that they can do from the factory as well as handle paperwork.

You are thinking too much like you are going to a regular car dealership...Elio dealerships could be just like walking into a Verizon store.

I do believe I am going to let you worry about all that. EM has said they will be ready for us and I trust them to know what they are talking about. They have Joel Sheltrown working on government regs now and I suspect that will include information about paperwork for each state. I am sure they know that as a new company there has to be a lot more verification that they are, in fact, legitimate. They will provide us with the documents needed to present to our DMVs when we take our Elios to them. Your local DMV will need to see the Elio in person but most everything will likely take place on line. So far I have been very impressed with what EM is doing. I don't expect that impression to change when the Elio is rolling off the production line. :-) Z

There's many situations to discuss here. But yeah, it's the logical extension of too much time to think about it. :)

You get yourself to the factory. If you need to get a loan, might be a good idea to get the loan before you go down there, so you can get a good interest rate. If not, I'm sure they'll accommodate you and get you a loan. I believe I've seen somewhere that your 30-day temp tag will get you where you need to go.

I got lost on your comment about time to deal with the DMV with trade-in, when up above you mentioned assuming no trade-in.

Goofyone will hopefully chime in, but I believe he mentioned that the stores will not need to be operational to get us early ones our vehicle. If you are saying that folks may be driving a trade-in to Shreveport, certain folks like Zelio and I have said that we might have a trade-in. I guess we'll discuss that on the phone with EM when they call us to complete the order and set a date. If they'll take our trade-in, we may drive it down. If they won't, we'll have to sell it on our own.

Like others have said, Elio is planning to operate like a store - not a dealership (no trade-ins).

My expectations are that 2 months out they will contact me via email directing me towards a site where I verify my physical mailing address and other contact information - in many cases it will have changed after the long wait. I expect at that point it will work like a typical checkout where you select your stock choices (color, transmission), and apply any additional options. When you reach the end you would be able to select your delivery preferences and be given the option to pay online.
There would probably be some sort of deadline to fill this information out. I remember reading in the reservation purchase agreement that you are allowed to defer your reservation once to a later date (I'm assuming this would bump you to the back of the line). I imagine delivery options will need to be locked in by something like 2 weeks+ ahead of time, and billing can either be done ahead of time or in person with loan/cash-in-hand when you pick it up.

As far as actual delivery in Shreveport, I'm imagining that they will work out a deal with the casino which has been discussed before - to offer rooms to Elio folks either free (subsidized by Elio) or at reduced rates. That would allow Elio to either offer scheduled shuttles from the hotel (depending on demand) or give them a center to set up information on cabs etc.

If I were planning it, I would offer a gratis 1-night stay at the hotel for each person for several reasons. I would also make the factory tours run twice a day, one in the AM around 8 and one at around 1 with corresponding shuttles from the hotel. People planning for the AM tour would probably use their gratis night the evening before so that they could have a rest from traveling before waking up and going to the factory to pick up the car. People arriving later could check in before leaving for the 1pm tour but that would only work for people who are within a 6 hour drive and want a long day.
In either case, folks would probably typically want a return trip the following day, paying their own (perhaps reduced) rate at the hotel for the extra night. There are a few reasons I feel like Elio would benefit from this, the primary being control. If you're potentially going to have 100+ enthusiastic people a day showing up to pick up their car, take tours, etc - you won't want to encourage all these people driving or taking a taxi to the factory individually at various times. By encouraging people to arrive by shuttle, you're more able to plan, prepare, etc. From the casino perspective, with those times, many people will be inclined to stay an extra night, spending the evening in the casino immediately after spending money and feeling great about it.

Anywho, I've rambled on long enough - just my opinions.

The entire purchase process can be handled electronically..........from placing your Elio order on-line, making arrangements for financing if needed, and payment. It should be nothing more than a typical credit card transaction at the time of picking up your Elio at the plant or Elio Store..........or a prepaid credit card transaction if delivered to your front door. The entire process should be hassle free as is everything Elio.
