List Of New Parts Versus Existing Parts Thread

I dont want old parts on my Elio, I want all new parts.... LOL

I dont care if it is an off the shelf or new innovative part, this thing will have a warrantee and besides, it is fun troubleshooting any problems. We have to remember, Elio is not reinventing the wheel, he is redefining the manufacturing process for maximum efficiency with a fuel efficient vehicle. It makes sense to use off the shelf items to reduce the R&D cost, but lets face it, this is a new concept vehicle and some items will have to be new.

so I buy a (fill in any electric/mechanical),tool/device- I open the Guide, and usually, on the last page(s) are exploded parts views, whose designations refer to a list describing each piece- except for small same size nuts/bolts which are described by size and quantity.-
Somewhere there has to be a TOTAL parts list for our Elios, inclusive of EVERY part necessary to assemble the car.
You can't build it without this, you can't come up with a total cost of all the parts without this encompassing list. And after all the parts are identified and counted, I think it will be VERY easy to account for 85% factor of USA products.
This is assuming that the total % are not by volume or weight!!(lol)

Lets see, you list 300 plus new parts for the engine, WRONG, the only new parts will be the block/head/pan,seals, the rest of the parts springs, valves, pistons, rings, etc exist already and will be incorporated into the engine. As for the engine and transmission mounts, why would they need to be new, existing ones will work just fine, the only difference would be how they are mounted on the frame/engine/transmission. Hydroponic hoses/tubing is also existing, they simply need to order the correct lengths, gasket material for door/trunk already exist, they simply cut it to length, the HVAC compressor is not new, they are ordering existing compressors from and existing company, ducts, filters exist, trim/carpeting etc all exist just cut to size, the suspension is built from existing parts....and on and on and on.....

Ducting, carpets, interior trim pieces, body pieces, a/c blower/HVAC flap housing all have to be custom molded, or in the case of the a/c blower/HVAC flap housing, you could use an existing one, but you'd have to custom design the dash, crash bar, and dash mounts around it.

Also, that engine and it's replacement parts have been out of production since how many decades?? Someone has to retool to make them again. That's hardly "off the shelf" unless your shelf is imaginary, heh.

I get a strong feeling very few of you have ever had to take a car apart, lol.

Show us how a car that is "mostly off the shelf" truly is when the number of new parts required VASTLY exceeds the ones on the shelf!

But apparently in the hive-mind, "off the shelf" means "someone somewhere at somepoint has already thought of it, so it should be simple to snap your magic fingers and make it appear *poof!*

These days a lot of paper/wire tubing is used for duct work. Off the shelf. The replacement engine parts are interchangable with a lot of modern engines still produced today. Carpets and such already exists for practically any application. Block and heads is probably another story, but they're building a new one anyway, so no problem!

Dash will be new, th ports for th duct work will be done at the same time I imagine. HVAC plenums aare available, even aftermarket, that are very small and easy to deal with units. (Kind of pricey at the retail level though)

The thing is, the companies who will make the "specific to Elio" parts, already have the fabrication equipment and knowledge needed to mass produce the parts, probably at a very reasonable price. Accesories such as the alternator, speedometer sensors and such are already on the market, needing Elio only to choose which ones and add them to the design.

Body parts, the frame, swingarm and such is of course specific to Elio, but the brackets can be place anywhere on the frame to use existing mounts, the swingarm will use existing bearing or bushings, The speedometer sensor on the other end of the Elgin dash operates on many vehicles on the road already.

I'm really not trying to argue, just point out that, even the vehicle specific parts incorperate already on the road elements in the make up of our future rides! For the specific to Elio single door, there's two door hinges already holding up a door on a competitors vehicle.

Yes, and carpeting does not have to be molded it is cut to size, ducting comes in lengths and are cut to size, and you prove you don't know about the parts of an engine, the same spring in an engine is used in a multitude of engines, the same screw/bolt/washer/retainer/etc are used in multitudes of engines......

LOL. I think you should go tear into your dash and interior of most modern cars and check for yourselves. You guys are misinformed. Sure, some fasteners are common. *SOME*. Quiz: do you even know what a TTY bolt is?

Torque to yield bolts are manufactured in commonly required sizes. If the Elio engine requires a non standard size, any manufacturer would be very pleased to come up up with the goods for a contract of this size.

Is this thread designed for any useful purpose, or just a medium for "willy waving"?
