So I wonder if the HUD might be the iSCOUT.

http://www.spadetechs.com/#!iscout/c1og7

It seems to have all the goodies that the configurator discusses and is advertised at pre-order prices of $329 to $379 which are discounted from prices of $449 to $499. Given a bulk discount from Elio the price feels about right and the technology should be available by the time our elios ship.
For those of us who are blocked from that original site, https://www.engadget.com/2016/06/15/iscout-hud-helps-drivers-with-directions-and-blind-spots/

I don't have a "smart phone"! I don't want a "smart phone"! And I don't want my car to be dependent on my "smart phone"!

There are still a few of us out here that can survive a few minutes/hours without continuous contact with others.
I may be in the minority, but I don't think I'm alone!

I resisted the change from dumb phone to smart phone for a very long time. I wouldn't have changed at all, except that I was able to get a very cheap cell service plan through a particular carrier. Their technology required that I switch to a smart phone, and I have since discovered a few other advantages to the switch. I still prefer paper maps, but having GPS maps in a pinch has been very handy at times. (I don't get lost in Seattle as often as I used to :p )

iScout seems a bit strange to me they are planning on using their own navigation information. It seems like that would lead to problems down the line, how is this small company going to keep this information up to date. It also has a simcard slot does it need its own data plan to work correctly their website does not say. I also have trouble with their blind spot cameras which are just little cameras built into the side of the base unit. I cannot see how they would be able to see anything useful. I guess I will just have to wait and see.
The cameras look back. It'd be the equivalent of you turning your head more than 90 degrees to the side to check your blind spot. In fact, they probably see about the same thing you do when you turn and check your blind spots.

iScout is NOT an American company.

Nice low-tech approach, but not really a killer since they cater to different markets. No cameras, gesture control or app integration for texts, calls, and social media. But good if you just want nav and speed. I think the Torque app has a HUD mode.

Not sure how much it buys you vs just having a dash mount for your phone, though.

True. I've edited my OP. It isn't a killer, just an alternative.

It seems like it would be a pain in the ass to get the cameras just right to see your blind spots. It also depends on how the dash is shaped. In my current truck this would be almost impossible all you would see is the dash because it slopes toward the windshield. I also would not want to have to hide it every time I got out of the car because it would be stolen if it was left sitting out on the dash.
