If the engine is detuned for MPG Maybe a simple chip change would add a few, (2-4 HP) that may make a big difference at a low cost.

I predict the acceleration will be fine but not fun. Like the 1.6L that was in my 2012 Veloster. 0-60 was in the 10s range similar to what the Elio predicts. Acceleration around town was fine but passing on the highway took some planning and high revs. Under normal driving it never felt like a problem. But the second year Hyundai offered the turbo that brought that time in the 7s range, about what I would expect with the Elio too.
Do not get me wrong, I think the cumulative driving experience of the Elio will be tons of fun, just not straight line acceleration.

I have no idea if that's feasible for the Elio. If so, and it avoided having to re-work the whole exhaust, might be an idea.

Yes! Like where will the batteries go to power this 50 HP motor? And how much weight will the batteries add to the vehicle? Will they be lithium ion batteries?

Horsepower is NOT free. If you do not care about fuel mileage... transplant that little Ford 3cyl. turbo into the Elio.
I think the Elio engine is a good compromise for power,fuel mileage and speed,given the weight of the vehicle.
