The times in my life I played it safe, took the sure thing risk nothing at best I broke even. Taking risk is what broke us out of the just getting by way of life.
I took a risk on ELIO, the gamble has not played out yet. I did so because I wanted to and can. have no ill feeling towards those that feel they can not.
I really hate taking risks personally, there's nothing sure about the outcome but I still do it. Somethings are just worth the unsure outcome. Sometimes I take them when I know I can absorb the loss if it doesn't work out, sometimes I take them not knowing if I have enough to cover it comfortably. That's the nature of opportunity and risk. Is the opportunity personally important enough to take that step? Is it important enough to take the risk not knowing if you have the capital (time, effort or money) to cover a failure completely? With the Elio we did have the money to cover the risk and the gamble certainly has not played out yet so I'm out nothing. It just all depends on how you view the Elio. If you are looking at it as a toy to add to your collection, the risk you are willing to take may be quite a bit lower. My wife and I see it as a practicality. It's a practical step we can take to reduce our personal petrolium consumption and a vehicle that is practical. It's also a practical (and enticing) example of how others could reduce as well. So for us, yes, it's worth the risk. Would we regret taking the risk if the Elio never got to market? No, we would be sad but we wouldn't regret it. It's worth the risk.

I don't understand taking a risk if one can't afford the loss. Elio Motors provides the opportunity to take different levels of risk.........right down to locking in a reservation with a $100 refundable deposit with no risk whatsoever. It's the guy that risks the $1K all-in that may not be able to afford it, but needs a number and can't wait an extra month or two for delivery.

agree .... to EM (per Jerome) a reservation is a reservation .... the way folks can express support that will help is to make a $100 Want In reservation .... doing so helps boost the number of reservations which is reported to help in generating funding in a way that protects the person form loss of the cost of the reservation

Agreed. People taking risks that they can't afford speaks to much more than just putting money toward the Elio, that is a pattern that probably dogs them in all areas of their lives. Although with that said, in some circumstances there are risks that do require more put in than a person has. Reserving an Elio shouldn't be one of those situations where you put down more money than you feel comfortable with or can afford. There are just so many options available, no excuse for going beyond your budget in this case.

I just wanted to be the 'first on my block' to own one, and the 1k all-in gives me some assurance that when [not going to say 'if'] they do, I'll have hours of fun sitting on the front porch watching people get rear-ended stopping to see what the heck it is [the bug zapper's lost it's sparkle for entertainment purposes]. ;)

If you couldn't afford to lose the money, you shouldn't have wrote them a check....That simple.

+1. There is nothing in the words "all in" that suggests you will get anything out! You invest in the dream and as we all know dreams have no guarantees. The value to us is in taking the chance and daring to dream the dream.
I agree, everybody with a pre-order has invested and dares to share the dream with no guarantee.
