I spent a grand total of 18 days in the Air Force back in 1979. Had damage to the vision in one eye (from a punch that smashed in my cheekbone when I was 15), which I was initially assured would keep me out of the pilot's seat, but wouldn't stop me from being a navigator or other in-flight position. Then while I was down sweating out July at Lackland, I was pulled in and told that I couldn't have a flight position, but I still had a seat for OTS. Then a few days later, an actual Colonel gave me the choice of surrendering my OTS spot and staying in as an Airman Recruit, or taking a 4-F on my eye and packing my bags. I thought about it overnight, then got on a bus the next day.

All these years later, I still can't tell you if it was the right decision.

I thank you for volunteering for service even if it did not work out as you took a big step many others would not have.

At least YOU tried. There are many, and yes, they work at McDonald's and other fast food resturaunts who gripe about this and that, but won't make the effort.

I've been in over 22 1/2 years, and have since lost most of the sight in my right eye, both knees shot (not from jumping form airplanes, either) and can still smile while doing my job. Yes, I qualify with my weapon, two last year before going back to AFGH.

I've been told several times over, you will know when it is time to retire. Well, I know that day is approaching, but as stated previously, I can still smile!
