If you watched the drama w/Telsa Model S and fire danger, you'll see it was a MAJOR crisis for the company. This was years AFTER the successful launch and production of the Tesla Roadster.

During the first year or two of sales, all it will take is someone's kid getting crushed in the rear seat because an Elio got rear ended to KILL Elio Motors.

No one has given any significant reason for Elio not to do have a high mounted 3rd brake light. I'd guess there's a minor cost and, possibly, minor increase in drag. But if Porsche and Ferrari have come up w/aerodynamic solutions, Elio might want to imitate them.

So far no one has replied to my first Q re. the production brake lights being incandescent or LED.... Has Elio never specified it? Has no one asked before?

As far as I know, and I read almost everything posted, this question has not been asked or answered and no we don't know. I highly recommend you contact Elio Motors and ask the question. There is a contact form on the last page of their web site. If you are on Facebook, I understand questions asked there get a faster response. I can't verify that because I am not on Facebook. I do know EM is trying very hard to answer questions now. My guess is they have increased their staff numbers to handle them. Just as a guess I suggest you ask only one question or at least related multiple questions. I suspect when people send multiple questions on a variety of subjects at one time they get lost in the shuffle. I look forward to reading the response you get. :-) Z

I think Dustoff posted the answer . . . Whatever lamp Elio provides as OEM, it's pretty easy to DIY an upgrade to LEDs. My early '04 RX 330 had incandescent tail lamps, but with some advice from my dealer and some factory expertise, when Lexus switched to LEDs as a running change a few months later, I DIY'd the conversion myself. It turned out to be relatively simple. I imagine the same conversion on the Elio would be even easier.

Thx for the replies, guys (and gals?).

For those against a high mounted 3rd brake light, please explain your objection.

IMO, it would be a minor cost (if designed in), but could improve safety. (I assume so, but that's just an assumption on why Congress passed and Pres. signed law requiring them on autos.)
