This letter is OK but what really needs to happen is :
  • In all states change the term motorcycle to Autocycle for the Elio or any other enclosed 3 wheeled vehicle.
  • Change the law requiring motorcycle license to a regular automobile license.
  • Change all state laws that pertain to Autocycles to no helmet required.
These items are non-negotiable for the Elio to have a fighting chance..

I agree with you IF point 2 means regular drivers license. We do not want this vehicle licensed as an automobile because that would cause more delays. A motorcycle license Plate is not a problem as near as I can tell, but having to get a motorcycle Endorsement is. :-) Z

"These items are non-negotiable for the Elio to have a fighting chance.."

I disagree. The last I read only a few states still have helmet laws which could deter purchases.
Whether an Elio requires an automobile or motorcycle license is of no consequence. If it requires a motorcycle license, and someone wants to own & drive one, they'll get the MC endorsement. If you want to drive an 18-wheeler - you get a Class-A w/airbrake license. I somehow don't hear whining about that.
One big problem in this country is people want everything handed to them on a silver platter. If the Elio ends up requiring a motorcycle license - get the license and stop whining about it. Most states just require passing the MSF course. Cheap and easy.

The states have no reason to provide an easier path for ownership. Quite the opposite - if enough of these vehicles are on the road, how will our bastardized gub'ment replace all the profit they take in on fuel sales? (remember, the oil companies only make ~$0.04/gal in profit - the federal gub'ment makes ~$0.15/gal, the state takes the remainder) Here in Colo, it's a total of ~$0.44/gal.

I have taken that course and it is a BIG deal requiring a motorcycle license and totally asinine! I guarantee that requiring a motorcycle license would kill the Elio and secondly it is totally stupid to require a motorcycle license because there is NOTHING even remotely resembling a motorcycle on the Elio.. Do you think people are really going to get this license JUST for this car??? I do have a motorcycle license but would not get one just for the Elio!

On August 28th 2012 "The Obama Administration today finalized groundbreaking standards that will increase fuel economy to the equivalent of 54.5 mpg for cars and light-duty trucks by Model Year 2025."

From IRS code section 30D
http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Plug-In-Electric-Vehicle-Credit-(IRC-30-and-IRC-30D) and https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/taxevb.shtml
Electric vehicles qualify for a $7,500 tax credit.
Hybrid vehicles qualify for between $2,500 and $7,500 tax credit based on each vehicle's traction battery capacity and the gross vehicle weight rating.

Jim, could you write a letter similar to your earlier one promoting a similar tax credit for any vehicle that gets the 2025 goal of 54.5 mpg already regardless of power source.
I'll work on one and have it ready soon..

Here is a workable sample that can be modified to suit your style. I'd also modify one to send to your Senators and Representatives.

President Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500-0004

President Obama
I am asking for your support for a project that will protect the environment by reducing the carbon footprint, reduce our demand on foreign oil, save the taxpayers millions of dollars, and create at least 1,500 new American jobs.

This project is Elio Motors, http://www.eliomotors.com, and I believe that it provides a unique opportunity to reduce our demand for oil and provide a fuel and cost efficient vehicle for the public. This vehicle supports the American auto worker by creating 1500 new jobs at the old GM plant in Shreveport, LA; it is made in America with 95 percent American made parts; has a 5-star crash rating; priced at $6,800; and gets 84 miles per gallon;

In 2012 the government established fuel efficiency standards equivalent of 54.5 mpg for cars and light-duty trucks by Model Year 2025." Currently electric vehicles qualify for a $7,500 tax credit and hybrid vehicles qualify for up to a $7,500 tax credit based on vehicle's battery capacity and its gross vehicle weight rating.

The sections of the IRS code that concern tax credits could be expanded to provide a similar tax credit for any vehicle that meets or exceeds the 2025 standard of 54.5 mpg regardless of power source. There are two sections of the IRS Code http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Plug-In-Electric-Vehicle-Credit-(IRC-30-and-IRC-30D) and https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/taxevb.shtml that could be applied to Elio vehicles to further encourage public support for fuel efficient vehicles and reduce our demand for foreign oil.

The applications for the Elio are unlimited. It could replace many of the Government owned vehicles that cost in excess of $25,000, get less than 30 miles per gallon, and routinely transport one person. The fuel efficiency alone would result in significant savings to the taxpayers. The savings in acquisition costs are astronomical since the $6,800 cost of an Elio represents a reduction of over 70% over the standard government vehicle cost of $25,000.

There are four things your administration can do. First, publicly voice support for Elio Motors. Second, approve an energy efficiency grant to Elio Motors to help get the Elio into production. Third, start replacing government owned vehicles with Elios and contract to purchase a minimum of 1000 Elio vehicles to demonstrate government support of fuel efficient vehicles. And finally, provide tax credits for the purchase of fuel efficient vehicles that exceed the 2025 fuel efficiency standards, regardless of power source.

I am not affiliated with Elio Motors, I am just a concerned citizen and supporter of the American worker and American made products. These actions will help Elio raise public awareness of fuel efficiency standards, employee American workers, increase the American industrial base and enhance the “Made in America” mantra.

It’s time to help reduce our dependence on foreign oil, protect the environment, help the American worker, taxpayers, and the American economy. I encourage you to do everything in your capacity as President to help this happen.

Sincerely

One to your governor and state representatives as well and follow the lead of Arizona in creating a unique classification for our vehicle! So no worries about having to acquire a motorcycle permit. Opens up a group that now do not have a cycle endorsement. Check in your state to see id this is even nexessary.
