That is planned! Big oil and all the big car manufactures make sure that the car has to stop at the gas station so you will buy stuff.
They just make the size of your gas tank to fit the interval.
8 gallon tank 84 mpg. You bet they will take notice.

Elio will go 12hrs @ 55mph.

Well, physics kind of dictates it, somewhat. You pay to haul around extra weight you don't really need, so most manufacturer's minimize tank size figuring the average American is perfectly happy with 350-425 mile range.

Gasoline weighs about 6.3 lbs. per gallon so a bigger tank would affect fuel economy.. This could be a problem for manufacturers plus less MPG would be less attractive to potential customers..

I wouldn't mind a 9 gallon tank so I only have to fill up once per week, but <$30 fillups will be nice as well.

You could always adopt the VW solution, a secondary tank and when you run dry you simply turn the valve.
