add-
no rear window,
no rear view mirror
two seat belts total
two power windows
soda bottle for windshield wash
no gas cap
just two floor mats
one reclining seat
one seat fore-aft adjustment
two headrests
less paint
less air vents
(probably) lower insurance
with one less wheel
less brake lines
brakes
sensors
less suspension parts
less lug nuts
and..............
You could be wrong about one thing. Floor mats may not be standard equipment. I bought a new car last night, and was charged for the floor mats. Go figure?

That Car and Driver article is devastating. Cornering, it lifts the inside wheel like a beagle at a hydrant? Oy!
Yea, I had looked at them back in 09' I think, it would be good for maybe inner-city pizza delivery or something like that, but you really don't want to go over 45 mph in it. It's basically a street legal golf-kart. If they had a reverse trike setup I probably would have bought one. Although I like the dump truck version.

Because they don't want to! People are more than happy to pay, what I bet is, a crazy markup for (as Bert said) the image and "status" of owning a Harley. Paul said long ago his vehicle is to be affordable. I'm sure people would even be willing to pay $13600 (double his target price) once these hit the street and gain more popularity.:peace:
This is the simplest answer and easiest to accept by far- and why not- it's either you buy it for what HD is asking or walk away! Very good answer.

I agree. Do they sell it here in US...because if they do...I'll get one!

They sell this for $7700, and it has 5 doors! and 4 seats, if this goes for $7700, why not $6800 with less parts?
I like this one too!

My sentiment exactly! Made in China with cheap labor! Like I said, it will be ELIO's biggest achievement if they can price it at their target price, made in USA and with 5 star rating!

When a person buys a beer – or a soft drink, they're buying a lot more than the liquid in the can or bottle. Among other things, they're paying for big buck advertising.

Same with cars. Cars today are overpriced in my opinion, for a lot of reasons. One major hidden "thing" people pay for when buying a vehicle, is advertising.

I just read, that the national average advertising cost per vehicle by individual dealers is a little over $600. That's a lot of scoots per vehicle on the lot.
Then you have the manufactures spending their big bucks each year:

in 2013….
Fiat Chrysler spent $1.97 BILLION in advertising
Toyota $2.09 B
Ford $2.56 B
GM $2.15 B

When Elio gets their vehicles on the road, their advertising budget can be a GoDaddy account with a couple of web designers. ;) Elio won't really have to worry about big advertising until they have competition.

The lack of a need for heavy advertising dollars is another reason why Elio can get close to that $6,800 cost.
Another good answer I've missed to take into consideration! The introduction of the P5 with it's pre-production engine for AIV will be EM's biggest advertising ammo to showcase to the world by far- taking it to the streets of America- but first thing first- it'll be at the LA Auto Show! EM should let Car & Driver Magazine testers take it for a spin so they can feature it in their Dec. issue! Now that would be something, would it?

The least expensive new vehicle sold in the US (by MSRP) is the Nissan Versa; it sells for $12, 815
Do you really think you'll get off the car lot for that much?
Here a list of the least expensive vehicles sold in the US for 2015

http://cars.about.com/od/toppicks/ss/Least-Expensive-Cars.htm#step1

Paul has also said repeatedly in interviews when asked about the Elio's price "1/2 the car, 1/2 the parts, 1/2 the price"
Going on that formula the least expensive car is $13,600; looks pretty close to me.
