I was never fired for doing wrong, but doing right got me every time. Ethics are not desirable if they get in the way.
No good deed goes unpunished. I have slowly come to realize that the straight and narrow path is sometimes over rated. In a liar's game, the best liar wins the first round.
We got a new piece of equipment (a laser cutting/engraving machine), and I was basically left in charge of figuring out how to use it. With a few google searches and a little hard work, I have programmed it to do exactly what we want, every time, with a few button clicks on an Excel spreadsheet. Now everybody (and particularly the Big Boss) thinks I'm some kind of genius computer wiz.
I was originally hired to occationally operate an industrial sewing machine, but primarily sweep floors and change garbage bags. I still operate the sewing machine, but 1/2 my work is on the computer now, and it looks like they're gonna hire another sewing person to take on some of the ever-increasing workload in the "sewing department".
Kudos!!! You never know when you are going to win. The trick is to stay prepared for the opportunity. I also advise to conserve knowledge. It loses its value when spread too thin.
