1.6 million Americans or less than 2% of the total workforce earned exactly the prevailing federal minimum wage .About 50 percent of them are between the ages of 16 and 24 years old. Summer jobs etc. Seems like a weak business plan and even less a reason for Socialism. .
.
Social programs are NOT socialism. Merriam-Webster says socialism is "a way of organizing a society in which major industries are owned and controlled by the government rather than by individual people and companies".....Seems to me we are sorta the other way around...
.
If so few are earning minimum wage, then raising it shouldn't have much effect on the rest of the country, right? BTW, I am curious where this information came from.
Every business plan should include living wages for employees from the beginning.
Look, we need those folks who hand you your lunch through the drive-through window, we need the guys who mow our lawn and dig out the culverts, pick up the garbage, check you out at the grocery store or Wallyworld, we all need those folks. In the area I live in, these are all $10 or less per hour jobs. There is no excuse for paying employees sub-standard wages except to make more profit, and profits made from sub-standard wages cost us all, in the end.
There is an income level below which basic needs consume everything folks make. And, conversely, the more above that income level people make, the easier it is to peacefully enjoy life. That level is about $60-65,000/yr.
If we ALL went to college, all got degrees, all started successful businesses, who the heck would do those menial tasks? Perhaps someday the sign will say, "Fry cook needed, culinary degree required."

Hey, we are way off topic in the thread about the loan to Elio. It will be a great day when we read good news about that! This little car makes so much sense I cannot see a loan being denied.
OK, G1, we are back on subject....

The Socialism comment was a reply to a previous post . With regard to Min wage ....You are correct that the issue is not relevant as most Min wagers are kids in their 1st jobs . But , no company will lose $1.00 in profit . Higher wage costs for food service and retail stores will be passed directly to the consumer . Many low income folks feed their family at McDonalds or shop at TJ Max.. Higher costs will have an effect on their budgets as well . If higher costs effect sales volume , companies will add technology to replace workers . Wouldn't it be just as easy to punch your order into a screen ?
Folks should also keep in mind that a Minimum wage often translates to maximum wage . If stores don't have to compete for labor , wages are kept EXACTLY at the Federal mandate .
