Personally I vote for a tram with tour guide. I have only been on one plant tour and that was in the Nash plant in Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1952. I was only 11 years old so I don't remember all the details - fragments of memory of seeing the parts being put together - but I don't know if we were walking or on a tram. Today walking a large plant would be very difficult for those of us who are the least bit limited in mobility. :) Z
Is it not Volkswagen who actually allows people to come to the plant, shop and then order their vehicle then follow it down the production line and watch it being made right before their eyes. NOW THAT'S A TOUR TO REMEMBER. Kind of like the days before and after the Hospitals allowed Dads to be in the delivery room. Right?

If I ever won the Lottery, I'd planned to take the Volvo factory tour. First, order your car from the local dealer, then Volvo flies you to Sweden, puts you up in a hotel, gives you a factory tour and then you pick up your car. You tour Europe as long as you want (on your dime), then drive the car to a port where it is shipped to your dealer. A vacation to remember and the flight to and back is courtesy of Volvo.

Great tour and they can afford to offer those perks because the Volvo doesn't sell for $6800.

For $6800......maybe overnight camping in the Elio Plant Parking Lot. I'd rather not watch my Elio being built..............too much of a perfectionist and may worry about what I thought I saw go wrong...........did they miss that weld........is that a scratch or scrape.......do over!

Most European automakers offer some kind of incentive for Americans to do European pickup if they wish however Volvo has the nicest travel package I have seen. Another benefit is that Gothenburg is a beautiful city and driving your new Volvo through Scandinavia sounds like a lot of fun as I have enjoyed my business trips to that area immensely.

It is my understanding that European automakers can offer these packages and/or vehicle discounts because they save a lot of money in export/import duties/fees they would otherwise have to pay. Apparently these taxes are much higher for a new unsold vehicle than for a private individual shipping their vehicle home after they have already taken possession of the vehicle.

This is true. I bought a new car in the UK for the same reasons and saved the taxes.

It would be nice to take the plant tour but that would depend on a few things:
1. Will the options I chose be able to be installed at the factory or in a separate place near by?
2. Transportation to the factory.
3. Break-in requirements (if any) for the engine.
4. Ability to get temporary tags to get home on.
If all answers are good ones then I would certainly make the trip.

Hi Jayne,

1. Yes

2. Yes/maybe?

3. No

4. Yes

Hope this answers all your questions...

Just kidding...

1. The factory is going to build the basic Elio... and the options will be added on at that site, just in another building, kind of like the 7 hubs/warehouses that will be around the US, I have read also that they are making deals with small after- market shops, which are starting to set up around the out side of the gates of the factory, for all the customers needs which are not covered in the factory... trailers, etc..

2. One story is EM will pick up the tab for a 3 days 2 nights stay at a local Casino, if you show a one-way airfare ticket to the factory.
Day 1, check in with Elio Motors, Day 2, EM takes you on a plant tour where you pick out your color and options, Day 3... Most important day... You pick up your Elio, the way you want it, at no deliver charge.... This is not locked in... Paul Elio wants this...But marketing wants a deliver charge on ALL Elio's... so the battle is not settled yet...

I myself want the Tour package deal with no delivery charge...

3. Todays new engines, from what I am told don't need the 500 mile warm up like the old ones did, thanks to one of the suppliers of the Elio engine, tech talk blog, states all the information about it, so We are safe that way...

4. When I talked to Elio Motors about tags and motorcycle insurance, I was told that the all legal paperwork would be taken care of at time of sale... so yes, some sort of tags will be issued for each State, and they are working a deal with the Insurance company's...

I would think any Insurance Company would love to make a deal for a low cost insurance package on a Elio... for over 25,000 and climbing... new customers.

You can find a lot more information about each of these questions in all the threads...

Will EM only cover the 3 days if you come by air? What if you take the train? :-) Z
