I could see it working something like this: Paul Elio brought the idea to America, and America made it happen by crowdfunding.

EM would advertise and generate a list of people willing to pay the full purchase price up front before production begins. As a prepurchaser you would need to have verifiable means of making full payment to get on the list, but no payment is required initially.

EM would determine what that minimum quantity of Elios they would need to do a first production run to make this work. I suspect it is more than 10,000, but probably less than 30,000 vehicles. Whatever that magic number is If they don’t reach the threshold number the program terminates and no money has changed hands.

The benefit to you the purchaser is that you get an Elio. When the minimum number of prepurchasers is reached, they require you to send in your full payment within 30 days of their request. In exchange, they guarantee you an Elio within a stated time period as you have ordered, and will refund your payment 100% if not satisfied. There will be plenty of folks willing to buy the vehicle if the deal does not work for you so Elio has only the risk of holding the inventory briefly until it sells.

The benefit to Elio is that they received their initial seed money capitalization from the group of individual prepurchasers, not a single large funding source like a taxpayer-backed loan or other private money investors that require a financial return. Elio generates profit on the first run vehicles, that provides capital to produce more Elios and they are off and running.

Maybe first run vehicles would all be yellow, or have a dash plaque or side stripes or something. :devlish grin:

So the two key questions are:

1. What threshold quantity of Elios is needed for Elio to make a first production run viable?
2. Once funding is received, how long will it take Elio Motors to tool up, employ and train workers, run the production and deliver?

I believe it would be very difficult to do.

The entire plant has to be up and running for the first one comes off the line.

The price of the vehicle is based on the assumption of low price per component which means parts must be purchased in large volumes. Thus they probably must purchase parts for a few thousand vehicles to get the lowest price.

The first Elio to come off the assembly line will cost $185,000,000 to make. The seconds Elio to come off the assembly line will cost $5,300 to make..

I too could pay for my 2 upfront. How many others could, is the real question. I don't think there are enough of us, with up front money, to get this project moving. It's a great idea but not realistic. I'm sure the folks at EM have thought through all the different funding options and are working on the most practical and least expensive cost wise, to get this thing rolling down the production line. Why else would they have hired a company to help them get the funding they require? ;)

How, in your wildest imagine, would you expect it to be guaranteed ?
Guaranteed that we either get our$ back or the E count me in. For those that can afford it, will be a no lose situation, unlike our all-ins! AND by the time it would happen we know the $6800 isn't gonna stay.

I've got a pretty wild imagination! I can see beating death, and paying no taxes! ;):D
