I am just guessing here but lets say the delivery charge is $500. If that is the case and if they offer free pickup then I have to say I would buy a one way ticket and fly down there, pick it up, and drive it back home. For me from kc it would only be about $200 or half after food, hotel, etc. Of there delivery charge. Plus it would be fun driving it home anyway. I bet many people who are within a reasonable driving distance would do that.
I'd like that to be the case, but many if not all companies normalize the destination charge so it is the same whether you're 1 state away or 10.
If they offer free pickup at the factory, it would be yet another break from tradition.

It is standard auto industry practice to charge a destination charge even when you pick up at a factory in the USA however we do not know if Elio Motors will stick with that practice or do something different. How this will work has been the focus of much discussion on this thread and others.

Personally I am hopeful that even if EM decides to stick with charging everyone the equalized destination charge they would at least give those buyers who choose the factory delivery option some nice extra perks. Some ideas which have been mentioned by Elio Motors, however are not guaranteed at this point, include access to an Elio Museum at the plant, a factory tour which could possibly even include the chance to see your Elio being assembled, airport shuttle service, and a deal with a local hotel/casino to provide two nights of lodging (night before and night after you take a factory tour and take possession of your new Elio vehicle).

I know for a fact that in Texas you can pick up the three wheel Stallion at the factory in Tyler and not pay any shipping or destination charges. I would assume that would be the case for the Elio as long as you make arrangements in advance! By making pre-orders, they would just set your Elio aside and wait for you to pick it up. Those who order their Elios from a dealer would pay for shipping and destination charges, just like an automobile. We shall see!

There will be no dealers for Elio's... Company owned Stores... But I'm going on the tour, if they have one, if not... I still picking it up at the factory...

They will give you 5-7 weeks notice, before your Elio is built, so you can choose what options you want on it...

As more Elio's are made the notice time will get less & less... until it only takes 24 hours.... to get your Elio

I would certainly prefer to visit the plant for a tour & drive my new toy home. I once flew to El Paso to pic up a motorcycle from a friend on White Sands Missile Range (near Las Cruces, NM) and rode it home on a three day weekend. Did I mention that the bike was a near-new Ninja 250? It made for an interesting ride, to say the least. The first part of the trip I was still breaking in the engine! Total miles for the trip was right about 1500, of which I did 537 on the first day, 569 the second, and an easy 400 on the third. A trip home from Shreveport would be a cakewalk compared to that trip! :p

Destination and Dealer prep charges will apply to Elio. I would think if you are picking up at the factory it would be minimal or no charge at all. Although everyone may have to pay Dealer prep.
Elio told me today that if we had a 1000 all in that we are invited to watch our cars completed and there would be no shipping. My only problem is it will cost me the same to get there than they would charge for shipping

Maybe a bus ticket would be cheaper and allow you to take full advantage of the offer?

This is awesome to hear. It will, be way cheaper for me to buy a one way ticket and fly down there and drive back then it would be to deliver and it would be awesome to see my car made!

So far Greydog seems to be my way of getting to the factory cheaply. I may change my decision depending on work and if they do charge destination. I think for the people who did a non refundable reservation it should be waved after that it should be charged no matter what. A perk for standing behind the Elio project.

This makes all the difference in the world. Upping my reservation right now!
