If the Elio is officially classified as a motorcycle, then crash test ratings do not apply. If a new classification is created like autocycle, then there could be safety tests that will apply like crash ratings. If the Elio is classified as a car then it will be tested by NHTSA and will receive a crash rating. Because of the way the Elio is designed with a full cage, I think it could rate very high in the crash tests. Just my 2 cents.
then watch a few side impact "safety" tests, as you watch as half the front gets eaten by the wall!
yea airbags deployed- and kiss your feet goodby

Ouch.

Moral of the story: Don't buy a Mazda 5.

Some things I noticed: The driver slid between the front and side airbags in every test, for all of the cars. The Mazda 5 side curtain airbags didn't deploy in the front crash test, and neither did the front passenger airbag.

It's just a partial wall those dummies are driving into. there are some vids full -ons, the side tests are scary, that'll be one to be avoided if possible.
You can perhaps open the passenger door and climb out............oops.

Interesting front off set tests.
I think they all had McPherson Struts which sort of pulled the front wheel back and up into the drivers compartment.
I think that in an Elio the double wishbone assembly would be sheered off with less damage to the drivers compartment.
(Just my guess)
Side impact.... The Elio has a wide beam in the door plus the tube frame above the door and the cage behind the door.
It should be interesting to see the results.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is proposing new regulations that would no longer classify an enclosed three wheel vehicle like the Elio as a motorcycle but rather as a passenger car. Sad.

Sigh... old news. Is the poster uninformed, too lazy to look at the multiple threads here or in the news, or just another muck raker trying to stir up unrest.
