Hey, if you really think your $1,000 is gone, would you give me the worthless reservation? I mean, if you really feel it is gone, why not, right?
Hey waitaminut! You already have a spot in line. I'm hoping I can win enough on a scratch ticket to put my $1,000 down. I think I'm the more deserving charity case. If need be, I'll buy his reservation for a dollar.

LOL... fair enough. I have a daughter who is about to get her first car and she said "Dad, if you are going to spend $5,000 on a used car for me, could I pay the difference and get an Elio instead?" ... a tear formed in my eye.

I have to agree. My $1,000 is gone and Paul Elio will make a great episode on CNBC's American Greed.
While "why are you here" is unwarranted... I'd make the case that saying Paul Elio would be on American Greed is unwarranted too. This car company may not launch, but I just can't see Elio's role as "greed". The guy has clearly busted butt for years on this. His vision and sales ability made it a possibility at all. I grant you there are odd decisions (lets build our own motor is daft), but I can't see any bad decisions were made out of greed. They were just bad decisions - they didn't further enrich Mr. Elio - actually the opposite.

Would you pay him $500 for it?

Actually, after following the discussions for over a year, I have to agree with Paul's decision to have an entirely new engine designed to meet his specifications. People have asked why they don't just use the old Metro engine. Well, for one thing, the molds have been destroyed. The engine is over 20 years old and the original forms for the parts and pieces are no longer available. Yes, they could rebuild the forms and such, but I don't see much less effort doing that than building the forms, etc. needed in a new engine design. And, after 20+ years, there have been one or two improvements in engine design that might be worth someone's while to incorporate.

So design and build an entirely new engine design that will provide the specified power at the specified efficiency. The first time that's been done for an American consumer car in over 50 years. If nothing else, that's something VERY useful to come out of this process.

The Metro engine is from another era - agreed that isn't right. There are however contemporary 3 cyl engines made by major manufacturers that would fit (hasn't Elio even admitted this). If the engine distraction wasn't there (consuming $), one wonders if real pre-production prototypes might now exist.

Actually the development of the Elio engine was one of the few good deals in the whole process. I seem to recall IAV only charged Elio $1.6 million for their engineering and development of the prototype engines. That's pocket change! Elio may have made some dubious financial decisions but I don't think the engine is one of them.
