The best of leaders can't effectively manage a team that doesn't have the credentials to get the job done.

If follower personalities like Fisker and Elio are contemplating a start up vehicle venture, they should be smart enough to assemble a Team with the credentials and proven experience to make their dream vehicles our reality. Unless, their goal was to simply generate funds based on an effective marketing campaign.
Another issue is that whenever there are federal, state, local grants or cheap loans, it brings everyone out of the woodwork. A few actually do well, a few fail and a bunch try. I see this all over the country. There will be a new technology park that will have all of these incentives, tax breaks and cheap loans. All of a sudden the applications go through the roof and a few get them. Out of the ones that do, the percentage of the ones that succeed is really low.

Add into that, there becomes the next big thing. Around here is was fracking. Every person that could weld or machine thought they were going to come up with some great equipment and thus got government help. Most of them failed because they were no good at any sort of management but had great ideas. There was a local company that got funding and loans for making new and innovative equipment. Problem was, they took too long and the industry went downhill. For the few left, they just bought what was absolutely needed (most likely used). This place would have done great 5 years ago but now, it's too late.

I was wondering if I could convince my wife that I'd save so much on gas that a Tesla would actually be cheaper.
$1.99/gal for gas here.

Prius gets 56 mpg... roughly 28 miles per dollar.
Tessa gets 3.1 Miles per KWH or 9.04c... 32.9 Miles per dollar
So... not that much. It would take a very long time to make up the$50,000 or so difference between the two. I suppose I could try to sell her on the fact that the Tessa is about 34.7 times cooler.

Model 3 LR gets 3.96 miles/kWh. The base LR is only $44k, so considerably less than $50k to make up the difference.

Maybe that will convince her?

True. I wonder when they'll get around to building the base models. I was comparing vehicles I could actually go out and buy today but I'm used to waiting...

Supposedly, sometime in Q1, but they haven't been able to ramp as fast as they'd hoped...and could potentially get pushed back until Q2. Of course, I don't know how soon non-reservation holders can get a car.

To be fair you can purchase a Model 3 today, there are several ebay auctions, and at least one owner on TMC is offering his build up right now. Of course, you have to pay a premium for them.

The Chevy Bolt can get over of 4 m/kWh. The 234 miles per charge is based on, essentially, 4 m/kWh and a 60 kWh battery. People have reported getting over 5 m/kWh, especially if you drive conservatively, and keep off the highways. Starting price of $35k.

Mathematically, even if Tesla ramps up *really* fast, not until almost 2020. At 5k built per week, that's still *100 weeks* (!) just to burn through the 500k pre-orders they already have. And if they do approach that rate, then they will probably sell a lot more before then.

The problem with looking at it just by the numbers is that many of the reservations are from outside the US. They're not just going to stop producing, and delivering, vehicles in the US to fulfill reservations from the rest of the world.

Fair enough. Say 20% of the 500k reservations are outside the US. That means you get your US-reserved Model 3 20%, or 20 weeks, faster. So you're looking at August-September 2019.

Assuming that Tesla immediately starts building 5k/week. Which is a production target he's been promising to hit "real soon now" for almost six months, but failing to actually reach?

Look, the Tesla Model 3 is, from everything I've read, a great car. A game-changer, really. You can probably thank the Model 3 for the fact that we now have cars like the Bolt and new Leaf. But if you think that you can go reserve one now, and drive it home before 2020, you're delusional. If you don't already have a Model 3 reservation, and you want to drive a great electric any time in the next two years, go buy something else. Because you're not getting a Model 3.
