There is a guy on the Miata forums who added two to his driver's seat and said it was surprising how well they augmented his small 8" sub. I suspect the Elio has a better chance of sounding good at highway speed than a top down Miata.

It's $600 because it's a custom made box, with it's own amp and speaker.
and figure in the price markups EM said they were doing.
Do a search on Thunderbox, and look at their retail prices on subs for other vehicles.
They are very proud of their equipment and charge accordingly.

I don't doubt MTX makes good speakers/subs, but I'm still not sure it is $600 good.
