New 520 bridge now open to traffic in both directions

SEATTLE (AP) — The new State Route 520 floating bridge has opened to traffic in both directions.

The span over Lake Washington opened to eastbound traffic at 1:30 a.m. Monday. Westbound drivers have been able to use the new bridge since April 11.

The $4.5 billion six-lane bridge replaces a four-lane version built in 1963. The state says it features heavier, stronger pontoons and anchors that allow the structure to withstand stronger winds and waves. It also features a bus and carpool lane in each direction and a 14-foot-wide bike and pedestrian path.

The old bridge is expected to be dismantled by the end of the year.

Awww they took all of the fun out of crossing it during a winter storm!! I remember being on there during a storm and waves are crashing over the guardrail , it would rock and roll up, down and sideways; it was thrilling :becky:
