.357s are great. I have an S&W 686+ with a 6'' barrel. Beutiful and effective. But I've heard discharging a . 357 indoors can permanantly damage your hearing. So, for home defense I keep it loaded with .38 special +P. Still plenty of stopping power, but shouldn't make you deaf the rest of your life.

P.S.: I hope I never have to use it!

And by automatics, I assume you mean semi automatics. I only know of 2 automatic handguns and both were made after 1986.

Correct, I'm refering to semi-auto handguns. I know I'm not the only one who commonly uses this term for handguns. However, there was a full-auto version of the C96 Mauser made back in the 1920s (although it had a detachable wooden shoulder stock for stability).

Why do you "hate on" the 22. It is a fun little cartridge. On a side note, have you looked at the Ruger Mark IV? It makes me want to sell my Mark III (first firearm I every bought) just so I can have a Ruger pistol in 22LR that isn't impossible to field strip.

Oh, I love the .22! I just don't really think a .22 magnum, 6.5" barreled revolver is particularly useful as a carry gun.

Well, if you are using Aguila's 1-3/4" shells, then the noise and the recoil are significantly reduced. (Plus being able to fit 9 shells in a 6-shot magazine is pretty cool).

Bottom line... IF you are going to bet your life/family on the weapon(any type) make sure you put enough rounds through it to verify it will function as designed.
I only say this because I have seen (on the range) a revolver lock up due to a hand to star fault on brand new revolver.
I also have seen a new mossberg shotgun lock up due to a feed from magazine rocker lever,not up to spec.
In both cases the factory fixed the problem. The point is... don't depend on out of the box flawless performance.
I like to put a minimum of 500 rounds through a weapon I am going to bet My (former LEO) life on.

Exactly. You would grab your home defense weapon and go! Also, hearing protection would be a handicap for you. Why would you want to take away one of your primary threat detection senses? I don't know about you, but if someone pointed even a .22 at me, I would probably do a number 5 in my pants {that's two number 2s, and a number 1}. One of the main reasons I went with the .357, was one of my best friends who was a machine gunner in the Marines told me, "if you ever have to point a gun at someone, make sure it's big enough that they can hear themselves echo down the barrel". That made me laugh, but also made sense.
