Unfortunately, many good companies like OLD DuPont were well run and employee friendly until the older generation passed on. The kids just listen to their financial advisors who spin the plants off to those who are in it to squeeze the last dime out of assets and could care less who they hurt doing it.

Precisely why you [people in general] should never stop learning, and it's ridiculously easy now days with the internet. You could literally be the next 'expert' in any subject if you apply yourself. You never know when your position/trade could be outsourced, so it behooves you not to be a 'one trick pony'.

I've been laid off from Boeing/McDonnell Douglas 4 times in the last 28 years for a total of 3 years. Had it not been for the training in ECS systems [HVAC on houses] in the Navy that allowed me pay the bills between lay offs, I'd be eating ramen noodles under the highway overpass.
Okay...huge exaggeration on the ramen/overpass thing. :rolleyes: The point is it's your onus to ensure your relevance with the changing job markets. A job for life is a thing of the past.

That's when you lift your glasses to your forehead, turn to the owner/victim, and in a very solemn voice say, "Its fried, I wish I could help".
One of the best kept secrets In wwII and the Korean war was that tank and Jeep radios never worked. LOL Quarter mile down the road and all the tuned circuits were out of line again. One guy came into the shop with his radio claiming he noticed all the screws were loose on these little aluminum boxes and that he screwed them down good and tight for me. LOL

NSTG8R = Instigator.

My present "onus" is leadman of the center fuselage on the F-15E Strike Eagle assembly line. Right now it's like herding cats with the parts shortages (Thank you very much, "Just In Time" parts availability :tsk: ) and people on vacation. If I can't keep my guys busy/productive, they get loaned out to other departments. Getting loaned out = crappy attitude when the parts come in and they return to my department.

I get that. I am presently waiting for I/O modules out of Japan. They had a 6-8 week lead time. I decided to stay home today as opposed to just being at work and looking busy..

We got a new piece of equipment (a laser cutting/engraving machine), and I was basically left in charge of figuring out how to use it. With a few google searches and a little hard work, I have programmed it to do exactly what we want, every time, with a few button clicks on an Excel spreadsheet. Now everybody (and particularly the Big Boss) thinks I'm some kind of genius computer wiz.

I was originally hired to occationally operate an industrial sewing machine, but primarily sweep floors and change garbage bags. I still operate the sewing machine, but 1/2 my work is on the computer now, and it looks like they're gonna hire another sewing person to take on some of the ever-increasing workload in the "sewing department".
